If you love snow, then come on up to New Hampshire!  As of yesterday, we broke a record for the most snow to fall in NH in December.  That old record of 43 inches of snow in December, set way back in 1876, was broken yesterday afternoon, December 31, 2007.  The total for this December reached 44.5 inches of the fluffy white stuff.

Of course, not all of the state actually broke that record, and some parts of NH went well over that record amount.  Concord NH, our state capitol, where the measurements for the state are recorded, is where the 44.5 inches was taken from.

Snow Covered Trees - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

Being here in Portsmouth, along the Seacoast area, we had less than that, but far more than we normally get in any one month.  As a matter of fact, we've actually already had more snow here than we generally get all winter long!

We had a beautiful fluffy snow fall yesterday here in Portsmouth New Hampshire, and I thought I would share some pictures I took just walking around my yard.

The magical beauty of freshly fallen snow really has to be experienced in person.

The peaceful quiet and calm stillness that you feel in a fresh snow just can't be captured in pictures, and nor can the real beauty of what I really see when I look at through my eyes instead of through the camera.

Snowy Branches Reaching Toward My House - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007      My Snowy Side Yard - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

To see the fluffy white snow coating all these trees and branches is really just beautiful.  It stays looking like that until either a wind comes along and blows it off or until the temperature rises and it all starts melting.  But until then, it's just beautiful to look at!

The snow that covered all the bushes and trees framed my house so beautifully yesterday morning - I couldn't help but take these pictures to share!

Snowy Side of House - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007      Snow Covered Birdfeeders - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

Each of my bird feeders has about 4 to 6 inches of snow on their roofs....now to hike out there through the snow to fill them up!

Snowy Street Scene - Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007  Snowy Street View Portsmouth NH - Ann Cummings 2007

When the snow coats everything like our last snow did, it creates such a magical scene everywhere you look.  These pictures really don't do what I was seeing justice....  you just really have to see these shows of Mother Nature first hand!

I hope you've enjoyed these pictures of Portsmouth NH - my treat to you on New Year's Day!!

Wishing all of us the very best in 2008 - health, happiness, peacefulness, prosperity, and joy!

Ann - I know just what you mean, the same picture here.  Nothing is as pretty as fresh snow hanging off the  trees.  Somehow it makes you feel like you have been transported to another world.  No wonder sometimes people speak of a winter wonderland.

Hi Ann,

We just love your photos and would love to know which application you use to get the effect you have on them.  We are inundated with so many techie posts that our heads are spinning all the time.  Would you be willing to share how you did these photos?  Pretty please......:) LOL!

Duane - even though I love the beauty of fresh fallen snow here, I must admit some warmer weather really would be nice about now.  And we've had so much snow here already that I'm ready to see it all melt.  It's snowing again as I write this!

Ines - I told you to get your winter gear out!!  But isn't it just really pretty to look at???

Jennifer - ah, you said it perfectly, "a winter wonderland".  And when you're outside right after a new fresh snowfall, it it just like having been transported to another world with total quietness of it.

Many thanks for the comments!!

Ginger - ah, I wanna be down there with you for just a little bit!!  It really is so pretty to look at up here, but most of us would really welcome a little of the warmth you're enjoying.

Renee - I agree with you, if it's going to be cold, make it pretty with some snow!

Ryan - thanks for the comments!  I bet it's gorgeous in your area when it snows, too.

Hi Linda - I'll pick you up, just let me know the time and which airport!  That is a good question, and one that a number of us up here get asked frequently, believe it or not.  After we had our garage sale, we just moved the stuff that we didn't sell into the garage, without doing it in an organized fashion.  We kept meaning to get out there and organize it so at least one of our cars would fit in there for when it snows, and did we do that?  Nope, so we still both get stuck outside in the snow.  That's right where both of our cars are parked right now, in our latest snow we're getting tonight.

Thanks for the comments on my house and yard -  I'm kinda partial to them, too.

Steve - well, now you can enjoy them through my post and know you don't have to shovel or even put on a jacket or coat!  Where in central Florida are you?  I'm from central Florida - Clermont.

Hi Lisa - I know exactly what you mean about your head swimming with all the info there is here.  I just sent you an email with some info in it!

Ines - rub it in my friend!!!  T-shirts and shorts?!?!?

Happy New Year to all!

Yaay, snow!  (except when you have to shovel it).  I love snow, but did a little shoveling myself this morning, as about 3 feet fell in the month I was gone.  My deck was hard to see and I know the meter reader won't even try!  Great to see snow in New England this time of year as you were short last year I think.

George -  ;-)  I think I'd really rather do that, too.

Joanne - you came home to 3 feet?!?!  I'd hate to have to tackle that by myself.  I do recall that ski areas were not happy with the lack of snow last year up in those areas.  We don't usually get very much here along the coast where I live - this year, we seem to be making up for it though.

Happy New Year!

Monika - what a pretty picture that paints!  It is really pretty at nights when it snows like that and all the Christmas lights are on - just beautiful.

Mary - we sure do work in snow.  If it's actually snowing when we have appointments, we just drive a little slower and dress warmer and wear boots.  Of course, if it's snowing heavily, appointments get postponed, and we might just head on home.  But, being in the northern part of the country, all of us work in snow and cold - kinda have to unless we just pack up and go away for the winter months.

Thanks for the comments!

Ann:  The pictures are fantastic!  We had a little snow in the Blue Ridge Mountains last night but nothing compared to what you all got.  I just love New Hampshire anyway, snow or no snow!  Enjoyed your post, made me feel like I was there.

Great picture we haven't had much snow the last few years. It misses us north or south. I love but hate the ice and sleet we normally get. As for shoveling I hate it, it's hard on the back and my blower is too big for 2 to 3 inches. Enjoy the beauty while it last.

Hey Jason - thanks for stopping by!!!  Glad you like my pictures, and I'm with you - no ice or wind!  Snow's ok - pretty look at, but then it can melt away....  MWA!!

Duane - Michign, I bet you do see some white stuff there for sure!  I'm not a fan of palm trees, but I do like a periodic trip to areas where the palm trees sway....   ;-)

Hey Miss Sue!! Yeah, I'm liking the forecast for this weekend, too.  50's and sunny - love it!  Hopefully that will get rid of all this snow, and then here's hoping we're done with snow, or most of it, by now!  Bear and I were just talking about the garage.  He read the comments of people asking why my car was outside and not inside.....just one of those NH things I guess.  Or maybe it's called a full garage waiting for a yard sale!!    ;-)

Thanks for the comments!

Donna - that's the best compliment I could ask for!  To make you feel like you were here - come on up!  It's really pretty where you are, too, and if I ever left this area, your area is one I'd certainly consider.

Keith - we don't usually get much snow here where I am right along the coast, but this year seems to be another story.  I agree with you about shoveling.  Actually, when it's light enough, I just get my broom out and sweep it if I can.  This last snow was just too wet to do that with, which meant I had to go find my shovel....

Monika - no, I can't believe what we keep having here!  Just not normal and it's not letting up.  BUT, wait till this weekend - temps in the 50's!  YAY!!!!

You are soooo welcome to keep all that cold stuff there! LOL

Areound here, snow = sheets of ice beneath. So roads = ice skating rinks.

We don't even have the machinery to clear the major roads if we get a decent dumping.

Hi Kay - I wish I could say we haven't had much, or I wish I could just say we've only had our normal amount, which is almost none at this point.  But, alas, I can't, so I have to just show off the beauty of it!!

Hi Sarah - sure you don't want to share even a little??  I can imagine what this amount of snow would do to your area with no equipment to deal with it. That would also mean people don't know how to drive on it, etc.  Not good!!

Many thanks for reading and for your comments!!

Ann, beautiful photos and description. You seem to really appreciate and like the beauty of snow and the landscape. This is a good thing if you live in New Hampshire. My husband is from Spokane, Washington and grew up in the snow country. I can hardly get him back there for visits. He really has an aversion to snow. He's stuck on California weather and I can't get him out of California. The beauty is rather amazing and I thank you for sharing. Happy New Year!

Hi Jeanean - I do really marvel at the beauty of a freshly fallen snow, especially the fluffy kind, but I do reach a point when I've had enough, and we've certainly had more than enough here for me!  I sorta understand your husband preferring to stick to the CA climates.  I'm not ready to move from here, but I know plenty of people who do find warmer climates for the winter months.

Happy New Year to you!

Becky - looking at those pictures online saves you from the cold weather needed for snow.  And we do have sun - it's sunny today, and the temperature right now is only 9 degrees -- brrrrrrr!  Your warmth down in Florida would be a welcome respite right about now!

Ann,

Isn't it an amazing winter!?  I'm down here just north of Boston and I find it amazing.  A few weeks ago I put up a post for those that didn't have the luxury of getting this much snow.  You have some beautiful pictures!  This was my back yard a few weeks ago.

Ann, what great photos. Hope you are staying toasty warm in that record snowy area, you call home. Those birds are definitely depending on you to track out and fill them up! Your photos gave that feeling of peacefulness and beauty. Thanks for sharing the beauty with us.

Martin - you're just north of Boston so I must be just north of you.  I'll have to check your profile to see where you are.  The picture of your backyard would fit right in with pictures of my own yard - very pretty.

Hi Gena - toasty warm indeed, even though the price of heating oil is ridiculous this winter.  I do keep my birdies happy out at Annie's Restaurant in my backyard.  That's what Bear, my honey, calls all my bird feeders.  I'm glad you got the feelings I was trying to convey with my pictures - that's exactly what it does feel like!
