Your Beliefs Don't Make You...

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Grants Pass, OR 199909023

Your beliefs don't make you...Your Beliefs Don't Make You... a better person, your behavior does!  On any given day, I hear people espouse their personal beliefs on Facebook, in a blog or at a coffee shop.  It always gets my attention when people pronounce their faith publicly.  The question that comes to mind is... Do they live it?

The world is filled with hypocrites... I'm sure we can call identify a few.  I'll never forget the day I saw Jimmy Swaggart bawling his eyes out on TV, confessing his adulterous sin before the whole world.  It seemed contrived, but what do I know.  I've always believed you can know a person by observing their actions.

I believe in God... I don't always shout my beliefs from a mountain top... nonetheless, it's the foundation for everything I do in life.  It's my conviction that propels me to do the right thing, and it's my conscience that tells me when I screw up.  I'm not perfect, I'm simply forgiven.

Every breath I take... provides another opportunity to make  a difference in this crazy mixed up world.  I'm hopeful that someday when I meet my maker, I'll hear the words... 'Well done, thou good and faithful servant!'  Until then, actions speak louder than words ;-)

Thanks Rob!

Oh Sharon ~ You're echoing my very thoughts!  Too much time is wasted on words alone... I'm an actions kind of gal... and it sounds like you are too!  Blessings GF!

That's a sad state of affairs... Jackson!  Unfortunately, I don't think an AA or BA will correct bad behavior ;)))

Blessed are the souls who walk the talk ;)))  I know you do... Tammy!

Ditto... Kathleen!  It's a job with benefits... just not in this crazy mixed-up world ;)))

Great post!  If we are true to our beliefs we dont need to shout it to the world for those around us will already know it by our actions.  :)

Mel-how true.  It's tough to always walk the walk but if we remember that we are making a difference in the lives of those we care about then it's the right thing to do.

If you truly believe this Mel, I'm a little surprised you found Alan May's post humorous.  That was pretty shoddy behavior on his part, dissing a "newbie".

Great post . . . . Our beliefs set the table and our behavior gets us across the finish line.

Good luck and success.

Mel - when I came into AA I thought it was all about not drinking. fortunately for me it's a 12 step program that always requires me to stop pointing the finger and look at my part in everything. Each morning I turn my life and will over to God and when things don't go my way I realize God's got a better plan. I don't believe you can be a hypocrite and have any real peace -  eventually people figure you out. (I remember good ole Jimmy - look where it got him, lol!)

Mel~ Actions always speak louder than words.  Unfortunately, I know a few hypocrites, I find myself praying for them (often).

Mel- I have always believed this and thank you for putting words to it.  Whatever your beliefs, it amounts to nothing unless your actions or behavior prove it.

What I've learned is that people who "live it" don't talk about it much - and those who talk about it constantly don't "Live it."

There's an old saying: "Going to church doesn't make you a Christian any more than sleeping in the garage makes you a Chevrolet."

Great post Mel. Our actions should speak for themselves, less talk more action.

Perfect post Mel.  You are spot on and I have found what you have found and that is the way you live your life, treat and respect others, without even telling a soul is living a good life.  Judging less and accepting more.  People find out how you believe by the way you are in life and the things you do without asking for anything in return. One does not need to espouse their good deeds or how they believe to others, the most important One knows what we do and how we believe and He is always there whispering in our ears.  None of this means that we should be doormats or used unless we choose to be, it just means we choose to live our lives in a manner we believe in.

I totally agree... Kimberlee!

Sometimes, we trip on the trail... Cindy, which isn't the same as taking perpetual wrong turns :)))

My mother was a big believer in actions... John.

Roger ~ I didn't find Alan's post to be 'humorous'... I said it made me smile.  Why?  I appreciate frankness and honesty.  I don't believe Alan is mean nor did he intend to disparage anyone.  His post was a 'teaching moment,' one in which, we can all learn something from ;)

Ditto... Lou!

I love your way of thinking... Kris!  Here's my take... 'Show up like a grown-up' and 'Own it.'

Well, you are more of a blessed soul than I... Donna!  I never thought to pray for hypocrites.

Prove it!  I like it... Kathy!

Oh Marte... the Chevrolet bit made me LOL!

Been sayin' that for years... Tom ;)))

Mary ~ Your comment reminded me of something Maya Angelou said... 'When people reveal themselves to you, believe them the first time!'  I believe!!!

I appreciate frankness and honesty also Mel, but I didn't find Alan's post to be frank or honest, I found it rude and obnoxious..............hardly a learning moment for the poor woman but certainly one for me.  I learned quite a few things from it, but I'll keep those to myself.

Ditto Paula!  And I think 'Casting Stones' should be left to those who are able to walk on water ;)

Roger ~ I've read your post and many of your subsequent comments and I have to say, you've shakin' my 'smile' and have added a 'humorous' twist.  While I respect your opinion, and I would probably never write a post on the subject, I don't take kindly to having my words made into a mixed drink ;)

That's awfully kind... Kevin!  Some might disagree ;)

Unfortunately, for many their beliefs DO make them.  Sometimes when I read things written on FB or in comments on Yahoo, etc. it's clear that beliefs do make them . . . hate, want to kill other people, go to war, discriminate, act irrationally, say irrational things.  I love God and the Baby Jesus.  Religion and politics make strange bedfellows, as that saying goes.  My belief:  free your mind and your ass will follow.
