A few weeks ago, I had reason to be grateful that Sacramento County has a first-rate animal care shelter operation. My dog, Kodi Bear, had managed to wander from home and begin an adventure. He had been missing for a couple of hours before I realized he was gone. Immediately, I panicked. Although, Kodi has been with me most of his 15 years, and he has been a sweet natured and lovable companion, he has no more loyalty to me than anyone else that will pet and feed him. And, if there is a kid around, I play second fiddle!
My first reaction was to drive around the neighborhood and try spotting him. I live directly around the corner from an elementary school. When I looked at the clock, I realized the school day ended near the time he likely disappeared. Oh great, I thought! He’s probably with any one of about 400 kids.
During the drive through the neighborhood, there were no signs of Kodi. The next step was to call our local animal control. The dispatcher carefully compiled data about his breed, physical description, and other information.
After the call ended, I was in the process of creating flyers with Kodi Bear’s photo, to distribute and place in prominent places, especially at the school, when the phone rang. It was the dispatcher from Animal Control once again, and she had the name and phone number of a lady, and her kids, who had Kodi. Sure enough, he had met them near the school, and followed them home.
I walked toward her home, and when Kodi saw me, he began his lumbered walk in my direction. He is old, so he was a bit out of breath. But, without a doubt, he didn’t think there was any problem!
The Sacramento County Animal Care Center, located at 3839 Bradshaw Road, Sacramento, is a state of the art facility, which rests on several acres. It is comprised of several campus buildings – a shelter, a spay-neuter clinic, adoption services, and the most popular of all, a 2 acre Bark Park.
The Bark Park provides dog owners with a place to bring their canine friends/family members to exercise freely off-leash, and to meet and socialize with other dog owners. The space is partitioned off for Small Dogs, and Larger Dogs. It was clear the dogs present there today, were happy to be there.
Kodi Bear remained at home. He has a large yard, and enjoys the company of another fur friend, my cat, Sybil.
The Sacramento County Animal Care Center works in partnership with other area shelters and animal programs. Their website is accessible at: Sacramento County Animal Care Center.
