I'm not aware of a "shrinking violet" left in this industry at this point. If you're selling real estate, you're here because you love it, not because it's an easy dollar.
I've picked up dead mice, live bats (not recommended--thought it was a mouse, and I was wearing gloves), seen my share of cellars with snakes (and other assorted creepy-crawlies), my share of mold, mildew, scary "ax murder or the Aliens from the movie "Signs" could get down here basements" (you know the ones I mean, the ones with one lone lightbulb with a long pull cord and you have to go down and pull it in the dark). I've seen these things and a million others, along with everything else we deal with on a day-to-day basis. Even in the NICEST homes, you can find one "fly in the ointment", or maybe just a lot of flies, and I've found a dead mouse floating in an indoor pool...during a showing. Pointed out to me by another agent.
However, if my eyes are burning and my nose starts running, do I run? And where do I run?
Five listing appointments last week, and three of five had my sensory glands on allergy full alert. I walked into one home and asked a potential client within two minutes "Have you been told you may have a moisture problem?" as tears were streaming down my cheeks. With all honesty, he had had a roof replaced in an older shore home two years ago, and had just reopened it for the summer season. He had also been listed prior WITH the leaking roof, and it had never been suggested to him that just...perhaps...there was a moisture issue. We sniffled together during the tour and my presentation.
No one is objecting to prior inspections, and to professional remediation and advice as necessary, in any of the homes. We have discussed full disclosure of any potential defects in all arenas.
Other than stating "Bring some allergy medication (check with physician first)!" in private remarks in our MLS, what are professionals going to tell me about alleviating a mildew smell in a home? Especially if a roof has been professionally replaced? I'll check with a trusted expert this week, but has anyone else had this issue? Any advice for potential moisture issues that have presumably been cured? My eyes are watering and my nose is burning.
