No More Excuses

I had a professor in college who’s email used to be noexcuses@aol.com. He didn’t want to hear them. None at all. If you didn’t do something that was your fault. “Own that fault” he sometimes said.

I hear a lot of excuses from agents when I am on the road. In fact I have heard many agents blame others for the failure of their business.

“Linda has been working in this town forever and she takes all of the business from the rest of us.”

“I was told in six months I would be making a lot of money. I’m not making much at all.”

“My company doesn’t do enough for me.”

“I’m not very good with the computer thing.”

Whatever the excuses are, I swear I have heard most of them. Frankly, I’m tired of it. In 2008, I hope to send everyone who gives me an excuse this link courtesy of Larry Winget. He is the author of Shut Up, Stop Whining and Get A Life.

Does this sound too harsh? Good! I think it is time we get harsh. We know from the National Association of Realtors that only 20% of agents are earning 90% of the commissions. That is a lot of dead weight out there. It’s time that the real estate industry starts shaping up and starts to provide real value to our homeowners. Let’s pretend our jobs depend on it because THEY DO.

 Kick in the Butt

In fact, let’s make this a pledge--the kick in the butt we need--as we start out this new year. If you are a manager of an office and have two or three agents who constantly make up excuses, send this blog to your entire office. If you, yourself, have made up an excuse in the past 72 hours, tack this blog up above your desk. It’s time we get real about our business.

Great post, thanks. I agree that excuses shouldn't be used. It will always be a tough market and tough everything but you have to conquer!  Good luck in 2008!

Matt, As an eternally optimistic person, I can tell you that the "not good with computers" excuse held me back the first year but I challenged myself and learned.  I never felt my company wasn't giving me tools (Keller Williams) and I KNEW 6 months would not make me rich.  I also know that Mega-Agent X may not want all the deals that come his/her way and without a legacy position, that is where I have begun.  In less than 3 years I expect to cap with my company, in a very down Michigan market.  My down days are few.  There is business to be had by all.  Figure out where it is and go there.  Don't take rejection personally.  I could go on and on, but I've got work to do!

I learned along time ago that excuses are only good for the people that make them.  Nobody else cares or wants to hear them.  In fact the only person losing out because of the excuse is the excuse-maker themselves.

Matthew, Thanks for the blog.  Excuses are to easy.  I hope I never take the easy route.  I hope you have a great 2008.

Hey Matthew

I read your examples of excuses and you are absolutely right you have to own your faults on why you are not successful. I said quite a few and I found myself out of the business and when I look I have no one to blame but me. So in 2008 no one can determine my outcome but me. Though we do need someone to light a fire in our hind parts to keep pushing when we don't feel like it!

Have a great 08!
