DC's Eastern Market: Foodie Heaven on Capitol Hill

Real Estate Agent with Evers & Company Real Estate, Inc. AB95346

If you live on Capitol Hill, what you pay for your house probably had a lot to do with how close it is, not to our nation's Capitol building, but its proximity to DC's Eastern Market.

Built in 1873, Eastern Market is the oldest continuously operated farmer's market in the city. It's a great place to buy meat, seafood and produce.  You can also find beautiful flowers and a fix for that sweet tooth.

The lunch counter is famous for its crab cake sandwiches, a treat that I enjoyed just this past Friday coming home from a morning listing appointment.

On weekends, the outside area hosts a fabulous flea market.  And local artisans set up tables to sell everything from original paintings and hand made jewelry to pottery and other crafts.  Much of this is locally made.

On April 30 2007, the market had a close call when it was seriously damaged by an early moring electrical fire.

The market is a lot more to the neighborhood than a group of great food vendors and fabulous fleas. Even before the fire, the market almost closed because of competition from nearby super markets that began to open up.  When the neighbors realized what was happening, the worked together to change their shopping habits and frequent the farmer's market more often.

After the fire, the neighborhood worked with then mayor, Adrian Fenty, to set up a temporary site across the street while the historic building was being restored.  During the restoration, the original old skylight on the roof was re-exposed and the light pours into the building.

The Eastern Market is located at 7th Street and North Carolina Avenue SE, off Pennsylvania Avenue.

Here are some photos I took at my last visit:

During the restoration, they opened up the skylight on the roof.

The flowers are fresh and fragrant.

And look at the colors of these fresh vegetables!

These pears would be wonderful with a little gorgonzola!

The fish look like they migh have been swimming somewhere in this hemisphere somewhat recently.

And how about these cakes and pies!  B'bye diet!
