This is an adorable little cottage in the historic section of Wiliamsburg, Virginia. It probably dates back to the early 1700's. And I'm guessing that it started off as the kitchen to the really big house next door.

Pat- one of the things I miss about living in your area would be all of the historic buddings. That is a huge chimney and I'm with you... probably this started out as the kitchen.

Patricia, I would also guess to say it was a kitchen with that fireplace. Can't tell you how many times we've been to Williamsburg. Great place to visit.
It may have started off at a kitchen since, for safety reasons, they built their kitchen's away from the main residence back then. Even so, that would have been one FANCY kitchen! HUGE!

Having grown up in the suburbs of Chicago, you don't see much of this. However, I have also seen these cute little cottages in the south. And you are right--they were originally intended as kitchens away from the big house.

When this house was built, it was common to have the kitchen outside of the house - the kitchens were a major fire hazard, and noone wanted a kitchen fire to take down the mansion.
I doubt that this house is currently lived in. There is a row of houses that are all really historic, and they are shops and offices.
Williamsburg was the first Capitol of Virginia. They moved it to Richmond because it was harder for unfriendly ships to get that far down the river and burn or pillage. Colonial Williamsburg is a beautiful town, and the College of William and Mary has a great camput that is fun to walk.
Pat, I just love seeing old houses! We were just in the House of Seven Gables in Salam MA a couple of weeks ago and they had their kitchens in the main house due to the cold weather. I still thought it was odd just for the reason you stated above - why risk burning down the whole house? But I guess they can't get out when it's snowing so much.
