Marion Barry

We have never officially met face to face. That is more my fault than yours. You have been accessible, I have never had the courage to just walk up and tell you "Thanks".

I grew up in the city. When I was still a boy, my parents bought a home out in the country. It was on Georgia Avenue and I always found comfort in the fact that the road in front of my house would take me right to Griffith Stadium or the Wonder Bread bakery across the street from the stadium.

I was just an oblivious teenager when I first heard your name. The country was in the midst of change. The civil rights movement was gaining traction. You had come to town and as best I remember you began Pride, Inc. I am not sure if the summer work program was part of Pride or if it was something else. I do know that you changed the face of Washington forever.  You gave the children hope. You gave young adults hope. You were a man that they believed in. You gave a face to all those that suffered in parts of the city most Washingtonians wanted to forget.

Thank you.

You continued your effort to help the children and got elected to the school board. You moved right on up and finally served as the President of the school board. You fought for better tools, better facilities and better accommodations. Congress controlled the money. You won the peoples hearts. You became larger than life and the congress could no longer ignore the needs of the city.

You took it to the next step and ran for Mayor. You won. You took over a paper mache bureaucracy and shaped the foundation of the government that operates today. It was not perfect. Your success was a slap in the face of those that initiated home rule with hopes the District would fail. You served and you represented every citizen of the city. You stood up to politicians, industry and red tape. You used your guile and your people skills to bring services to everyone. You took all those congressional lemons and made the finest lemonade. They called you mayor for life!

Thank you.

You faltered. Much was made of your mistake. You did not hide it. You admitted your weakness. In the face of national ridicule, you stood up and looked everyone in the eye. The national media attempted to make you a lauging stock, in the end, the joke was on them. You got knocked down a peg, took your medicine and came right back and got elected mayor again. You have withstood barbs and jokes and ridicule. You have truly held your head high and the people that elected you are the only jury that will ever matter. You were a voice calling out for them. You spoke for those who were silent. You spoke for those that were afraid. You spoke for those that did not believe they had a right to speak. You spoke.

Thank you.

Now, you serve as a councilman. You still work for the people. You have been through more trials and tribulations than any other public person I am aware. You have come through the public gauntlet battered, bruised but never beaten. You represent people, sun up to sun down. You have always stood tall and never backed down from a fight. Regardless of how high you have moved up the ladder of success, you have always remembered the people that you have promised to represent. To me, you will always be "mayor for life."

Much has been made over the years regarding the times that you have fallen. Little has been mentioned about all the good that you have done. You still remain the lightning rod for media attention any time that their is a hint you may have done something wrong. Well, enough is enough.

We have grown from the dreams of our youth to enjoy the memories of old age. If no one else takes the time, I want to thank you for all you have done for the city and those that had no one else looking out for them. I should have written the post when I sold Mrs. Deering's home. You remember her. She worked for you for years and let me rant about the unfair treatment you have received before she let me know she knew you.

As the sun sets, you are a good man.

Thank you

I like Fenty, but Mayor Barry was certainly colorful, and the people did love him. I am sort of surprised there has been no movie.

John, I did not follow Mayor Barry's career as a young man when he made his mark.  I am following Adrian Fenty, however.  I would vote for him for President.  What an amazing guy!

And I really like the new look!

Goodness, what a walk down memory lane.  I too grew up in DC.  We were dirt poor, so owning wasn't an option, but we rented from family on C Street NE not too far from the now Armory and Stadium.  I spent my summers in the country in NC.  So, I had the benefit of learning about the out of doors with my grandfather, that dear man who taught me to catch a fish and shoot a squirrel at 50 paces.

I too remember Marion Barry fondly.  Remember when Pride, Inc put trash cans on every corner to keep litter down in DC??  I do.  When Barry became Mayor, I owned a secretarial school at 18th & K Streets N.W. My business was training under contract to government offices and the DC government was a main client.  We did much training for their Pride, Inc. young folks.  They were serious, dedicated students.  Eventually, I went on staff at WTI and ran an off-site training program for the college under a contract to the DOL.  We had 100% job placement.  That's the type of work for which I remember Marion Barry.

Folks don't understand the disparity between rich and poor in DC before Barry.  Mayors were appointed, not elected and the power was then in the Congress.  Wait! !   It still is.  Gad! ! !

Marion Barry liked his night life a tad too much.  He succumed to drugs.  However, unlike many, um most??? in Washington, he never got rich in office.

John, thanks for this.  If someone is not from the area and didn't know Marion Barry's contributions, their impressions would be largely guided by what the media chooses to print.  And then you'd wonder how on earth he continues to get elected.  This answers that question nicely.  I found it very interesting!  Thanks!

Lenn - Thank you for sharing your memories as well. People outside the city have minimal knowledge of DC. If they have heard of Mayor Barry, it was probably on the Jay Leno show. One thing I did not mention was the Mayor never avoided making a comment about something. Some of his comments have been used as out takes in an effort to ridicule him.

I have to disagree on his getting rich. Anyone that has so many people concerned for his welfare is richer than many with piles of cash salted away.

Susan - In Barry's case, I can only hope history will not be written by those that have defeated him.

John, it is always interesting to hear more to a man's story.  To an outsider like me, his re-election was baffling.  I didn't know his history.  Thanks for shedding some light.

Elaine - When I was a young man, I knew everything. Now I am older and I understand that the very same story can have two opposite sides. The really weird thing is that often, both sides are correct. Life is confusing, so most of us rely on one side and hope we don't step in the do-do on the way home.

As someoe who does not come from the D.C. area, i can tell you that most of what I've heard about Marion Barry was the bad and sensational. It is just a shame that the sensational sells while the good is not considered publishable.  New Yorkers heard it on the evening news and even though I'm part of the Liberal Left - I didn't hear about the GOOD that he has done - at least not clearly and distinctly. To some it was a mystery as to how he got reelected after all of his issues.  Most people thought it was crazy that he was reelected - the WHY was missing due to a total lack of curiosity. What we saw was mostly on SNL and LENO.

Lenn has a marvelous point here that should never be lost...We all have our flaws..we are ALL sinners of some kind.  But what would you prefer?  A person who used their office to get rich and leverage power or a person who had some social short-comings but did everything they could to make the city they cared about a better place and never leveraged anything out of greed.  I'd take that latter ANY day.

There was an email sent to me once on this topic - I'll try and find it -

Ok - This was part of my archives - This may be a tad irreverent, but the point is important. I think one of our problems is that we as American's sometimes don't get our priorities straight when we choose our public officials.  The loss is ours and it might have a great deal to do with our innate provincialism....In any case this was meant as humor and was sent to me last time we had to elect a president. I couldn't find it my old emails but found it on-line easily enough...

It is time to elect a new world leader, and your vote counts.

Here are the facts about the three leading candidates:

Candidate A: Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B: He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whisky every evening.

Candidate C: He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasional beer and hasn't had any extramarital affairs.

Which of these candidates would be your choice?

Candidate A is Franklin D. Roosevelt

Candidate B is Winston Churchill

Candidate C is Adolph Hitler

Ruthmarie - That is an impressive triple play. On your first point, I hope every damn member of this group reads about Marion Barry. He deserves much better than he has gotten. Lenn is on target, Barry never got rich. I happy to say he is still an elected official in DC, working for the residents of his ward every day. The quiz drives home the point that there is much more to leadership than meets the eye.

Didn't mean to dominate the comments section.  But I HAD NO IDEA what a wonderful contribution Marion Barry made to D.C.  Most of what I knew about him came from tabloids. I never understood why he was re-elected.  But the other thing that we have to look at is our collective "morality."  Jesus said "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." None  of us are perfect. But we have been focusing on the wrong issues. We should be more concerned with whether an official will take a bribe  than whether or not he/she is gay.  If someone smokes some weed, but has kept their hands out of the till - isn't the latter more important than the former?  Campaigns have been focussed on so much "he said/she said" garbage and the real issues - SERIOUS ISSUES- have suffered. I'm hoping this year is different...Let's hope.....

Ruthmarie - I welcome your comments and thoughts on anything I share. I am glad that I was able to peel back the layers of opacity that had covered Marion Barry for you.
