...and three kids later I finally decided to install permanent gates for my children.  I have a two-story house and we've had a temporary type gate at the bottom of the stairs for years.  It's been quite cumbersome as it was difficult to operate and would sometimes come out of place.

So I went to every (pregnant) woman's dream store, Babies R Us.  My wife is pregnant with our 4th child and we decided to install a better gate at the bottom of the stairs and also install one at the top of the stairs.  Things were easy with two young ones.  Then when the 3rd one came along, it still wasn't too bad because the first two were old enough to know about stairs.  But in July we'll have a 7-year old, 5-year old, 2-year old and a newborn.  So sturdy gates at the top and bottom of the stairs seem like a great idea.

So I went to work and installed the gates.  The are metal and actually match our current railings.  It gives us a little more peace of mind.  If you have a two-story house, please consider installaing these gates.

It was a blessing to me on the day my kids were finally old enough so that I could remove all that child safety crap from the house.

It was an even bigger blessing when my oldest daughter got married, had two little boys, and I had to reinstall all of that important child safety equipment in my house.

Well worth the effort.  You just never know where they are going to end up if you turn your back for one second.

Good advice and very wise of you to practice what you preach. Congratulations to you and your wife and wishing you to have another healthy child.

Erby, great story.  I must admit that I can't wait to take them down.  But I'll remember to save them for the grandkids.

Derrick, thanks, we are very excited.

We just had our grandson born in May at our house for the holidays and it took 5 of us to keep him corralled. A gate may be in our future. Thanks for the post.

Those gates are so beneficial in keeping the little ones where you can keep a eye on them.

We kept our safety gate up for about 6 years!  It always came in handy when guests would visit with their children!
