Missing Photographs - Blame It On Google Docs-But There is still Something Puzzling Me

I had this worked out about 3 weeks ago but wanted confirmation from the AR folks; that’s why I wrote the post about Missing Photographs on Old AR Posts.

When I draft a post, I do it in Google Docs and copy and paste to AR.
I love Google docs because I can choose fonts, colors, sizes, etc. When I first began using it in Jan 2011, I was putting the photographs for the post within the Google docs draft so that it was copied and pasted with the draft. I stopped doing that about Oct 2011 and placed them directly into my AR post instead; it saved time.

My Google Docs is set to private-I don’t need just anybody seeing my drafts (that’s like having mySlipslip showing- does anyone wear slips anymore?). Guess what, those pictures that I put into my drafts are the ones that were missing from my posts. I figured this out because the urls for the pictures had a https instead of http...secure, right?
Puzzle
Okay, that mystery is solved, I think. But, the really odd thing is that those pictures were there until about 2-3 months ago. So what changed 2-3 months ago to cause them to disappear?

FYI- the AR folks told me it was my server’s problem, and I would need to contact them. So I’m posting this information so they can 'splain it to someone else.

BTW, I have already replaced all the photos; in fact most were replaced before AR got back to me with their "solution".

Toni,

We experience some anomalies using Google docs, as they keep changing or updating their software.  One tip we were able to glean is that you have to sign out from you gmail account if you have one, before you sign in to google docs, and that also is important with any other google stuff you may use.  Hope I have not added to the confusion, but that little trick helped in minimizing Gooogle issues.  LOL A

Hi Toni - That's a great piece of detective work, and it makes complete sense. I never considered GoogleDocs, but lucked out with Scribefire and Firefox, even though there have been a few small issues there.

There are all kinds of mysteries out there.  I have missing photos and I use Word Documents to do my posts and "drag and drop" them into the AR blog window.  Sometimes the font and colors transfer, sometimes not.  At times even when they do transfer over, when I click on "submit entry" it reverts to the default font used by AR..............every day is a crap shoot.  On my posts yesterday, it all worked fine, today............nope.

Toni: That's beyond my skill set.  I post to my WP blog, then copy the html to AR and make minor changes before posting here.  I guess I am ok because my images are really being stored on my WP site, not AR.  I've used GoogleDocs but only to pass files.

Alexandra - I'll keep a lookout on them but I don't put photos in Google Docs anymore. I didn't know about signing out; if I sign out then I can't use Google docs???? Thanks for the tip.

Dick - I've used Scribefire through Firefox but had so many issues that Google Docs was a relief. I will continue to use G docs but will place my photos through AR. I can choose where I want them, resize them and they are good. And, they have an AR url.

Roger - Word is the worst choice as far as I'm concerned. I couldn't take the "garbarge" that I had to delete when I copied to AR. I started with Word and realized quickly that I needed another choice. Went to Scribefire - still had issues. G-docs is the best so far.

Anita - I post to AR first for the G-juice. Then to WP. I don't find WP has as much.

Toni: Seems nothing ever stays the same. We keep our family photos on Kodak; today they announced they are closing Kodak Gallery and moving everything over to Shutterfly. It would be nice if AR could provide all the bells and whistles we need on the tool bar.

Toni- good detective work!  I use Google Docs but put my photos and links in after I copy and paste it into AR.  I know you can set your links in Google Docs but I couldn't find a way to make it so the link opens in a new window.  I do have trouble with Google Docs though.  From time to time the font I've written in doesn't transfer to AR, sometimes what I've "bolded" gets un-bolded, and a few other glitches. All in all it's better than trying to write a post in AR and lose it.

Toni, I also use GoogleDOCs and love it. Soooo much easier than writing in AR as I lose a lot of post when I write a draft in AR.  I add my photos and links in after I copy and paste the information into AR.  I learned to do this a month ago.

Carl - that's why I bought a portable hard drive. I keep all my photos on that.

Kathy - I never could find out how to set "open in new page" either. So i set my links in AR too. I get the minor stuff too once in a while but it's way better than using Word.

Rebecca - It is easier than using AR and we have so many more choices.

Karen - i think most of us who are on the cutting edge :) could write a book. It seems like we have to go through all kinds of stuff to get to a comfortable place.

Leilani - me too. It took several days to replace them but luckily I keep them on my portable hard drive. I had to go to Google for a couple.

Kristin -  I have been doing that way since Oct. It works great.

Roy - Google docs is so easy and has so many choices. Then you just control C and control V into AR. Don't put your photos in from there though.

Curtis - I had issues with Scribefire that I don't have with G-Docs.

My feeling is that when AR changed servers-something else changed that threw G-docs photos off kilter.

Toni, I don't use Google docs, but I do use word and I'm missing several photos... It's going to take along time to replace them.

Howdy and evening Toni

Toni my friend, I don't and have not ever used Google Docs. But I don't think its a problem with your servers. More than likely it happen because of the AR servers move and the changes that the AR ITs have been doing in the background. I also had some photos go MIA, and seeing that you and I do not use the same servers.

Have a good one

Nick - it's a long process and irritating but worthwhile doing. I resolved to work on it for a hour each evening. Sometimes I did, sometimes i couldn't but I finally got the entire 2011 done. Now I need to go back and look at 2010 :)

Dale - I agree with you. I have had numerous problems since that changeover and AR tells me it's my servers. I wish they would quit playing around with everything. I haven't seen any improvement in speed which is why they "moved".

HI Toni.  I send out emails through MailChimp and I suspect when I'm not paying them $10/mo, the photos on the old emails will turn into little X's.  Which is okay, emails aren't expected to have the shelf life of a blog.

Someday Active Rain will start purging photos too.  There's no such thing as forever.
