I am worn out- Chelan and Leavenworth Real Estate Inspection

All Worn OutWell Okay I am not worn out... maybe just a little tired.

One of the things we take for granted in our home is the electrical system and especially receptacles, or what most people call outlets and these devices do wear out.

These devices do not last forever and need replacement from time to time. How long they last depends on several factors, how often they get used, how good the device was installed (grade/quality of receptacle installed) and just how long they have been there.

One problem with aging receptacles is that it can no longer hold a plug snugly. Receptacles have metal contact points for the hot, neutral, and ground connections that, over time, begin to wear and loosen their gripping ability that holds plug blades in tightly.

This lack of good contact builds up the resistance and causes heat. This heat will cause problems in the wiring and the receptacle itself.

Here is an example of a receptacle that has worn out. When I first tested it it would barely hold my 3 bulb tester. I decided to use my circuit tester to show the voltage drop at this receptacle due to the resistance from improper contact.

                                  Electrical test on worn receptacle

Normal voltage drop should really be below 5% and here we can see it is at 37%.

You should periodically check your receptacles in the home for any conditions that may warrant replacement or repair such as, worn, loose or broken receptacles.

An ounce of prevention, well you know the saying.

Interesting post Donald.  I had not give much thought to receptacles and I guess I had assumed they lasted forever.  Thanks to you and AR, now I know better!

Kevin, Thank you. When you test enough of these you see how often they are getting on the back side of the functionality.

Don, I gotta say that I can't think of a single electrical "melt-down" that is a good thing.

That picture will definitely motivate me to take a look at our outlets and see about getting them checked and replaced.

Morgan, "Shocking" photos always reminds us of the bad potential in things.

It is a good idea to periodically check the receptacles. Especially those that get used a lot.

With all the gadgets most people have today we plug things more than we used to. I bet we will see more worn out receptacles in a few years from this practice.

People don't realize how older, or often-used, receptacles can be a danger.

BUT!!  Did you lick that?  Looks like a little molasses and caramel.  Try it before you condemn it completely.

Jay, Tasty ;) It just needed a little chocolate to finish it off. But seriously yes these do wear out and they can be an issue.

Valerie, That is an extreme case of what can happen ut often in older home I find receptacle that are pretty worn and need replacement.

Donald, point well taken! Wall outlets do eventually wear out over time. I wasn't aware of the voltage drop though. Thanks for the info.

Donald, great photos, this is something that, I think most homeowners, don't really see the potential problems associated with a worn out plug. Thanks,

Michael, Thank you. I used the voltage drop as an example of why it becomes an issue. I see in new construction what the NEC would consider unacceptable voltage drop due the use of back-stabbed outlets also.

Adrian, Thank you. If we can understand the workings of our home better then the better we can be at protecting the investment and provide a safer environment.

Jim,

The receptacle I had the tester in was so sloppy my 3 bulb would just fall out of it. Oh yeah they where all back- stabbed outlets on top of it.
