New Year's Traditions - Argentina, Japan, Venezuela

Here is an interesting tradition - my daughter has a good friend who grew up in Argentina and there, besides doing the fireworks thing that we do, they like to go swimming at midnight! Public pools stay open specifically for those that want to participate in this tradition!!!

In Japan all of the temples ring their bells exactly 108 times to ward off the 108 earthly desires which are considered evil spirits! That one is really interesting.

In Venezuela they do something that I do with many of my friends! We write out our wishes and desires for the New Year and then burn the paper in a bonfire, offering this up to the powers that be to assist us in making these things become reality! This is one that we (my friends and I) also do during Solstice !

Swimming at midnight in Argentina is fun for this reason- it's summer. I have to admit... I do feel sorry for those who have to dress like Santa in such heat.

Well that's very interesting... but even here in CA it would be too cold for swimming at midnight!  At least where we are in the San Francisco Bay Area.  I like the Venezuelan one a lot.  Might take that on.  Thankas!

I have a dear friend who is in Argentina.  When she gets home next week, I'll have to ask her if she went swimming at midnight!
