It was brought to me attention that someone who was getting ready to list their home has a problem.

The story goes like this. The daughter was to be taking a nap. Well, she was not doing so well in her bedroom so Mom puts her in her bedroom. After about an hour the Mom goes into her bedroom to see if the daughter is taking her nap. Guess what? You are correct she was not taking her nap. The daughter did have a question for Mommy. The question goes a little like this? Mommy why is there a mouse running around in your bedroom? Well, Mommy was like oh child just lay down and take a nap.

The Mommy should have listened to their daughter, who I might add has quite an imagination.

I couple of weeks go buy and then Mommy is seeing results of that mouse. Now it is getting closer to the time of putting the home on the market and I get a phone call from the Mommy, Susan is mice a material fact? Ugh. I said, what is going on? I get the whole story. So, I give her a phone number of a person to call that will take care of the issue.

What happens here goes a little like this. I talked to the Pest control gentleman and he tells me if they see one then there probably is 10 of them running around. I was like yikes. I did want to tell her, so let the Pest Control gentleman tell her the news.

The pest control gentleman put down traps in locations that the children would not be harmed and then put down something that would make the mice thirsty and run away for water.

I can tell you that they did not sleep that much that night because the the mice leaving the premise, but there are no more evidence of the mice.

Lesson here is to listen to the little ones and get it taken care of right away. Sometimes you cannot do it yourself and it should be taken care of by the professionals.

12 Comments on Getting rid of Mice?

EWHHH!  I am terrified of mice or any kind of rodents so if I see one or know of one...guess what I am moving!

Naoma - Are you saying you would not want to get rid of them first? Isn't it material fact?

I had mice in my house when we bought it (never disclosed by the seller but what was I going to do?) so I called my friendly exterminator and had him "get rid of them". I have never seen one in the house since and it has been 4 years.

When colder weather arrives, so do the mice. They seek shelter and warmth and will crawl in any open crevice they can find. Did you know mice can slip through a crack the thickness of a dime? Since the seller is likely to have to disclose this to a buyer, it might be a good idea to add, "and we hired a professional to seal up all possible exterior entry points." Because it might come up.

Since moving to CA, I haven't had to deal with mice, but they were certainly an issue in my 1898 Victorian in Minneapolis. I put out traps and started keeping score. My cats were beating the traps by 10:1.

Judy - I know they will try anything to portray a good home when it needs help and they should not. The seller should address issues like mice and treat them.

Elizabeth - Yes colder weather does bring everything into the home.

Great point about full disclosure Susan. Growing up in rural Idaho cats took care of any rodent problem but the wisdom in an exterminator would be documentation to prove the problem/mess was taken care of. Deer mice are known to carry the Hanta Virus. Their droppings are loaded with the disease and you won't be eating it but the dust can transmit the disease if ingested. This can very easily happen as you clean up the stuff. In my opinion, mice can be just as big an issue as mold!

Jeff - Oh I forgot about the disease that they carry.  Thanks for your information on this one.

It's best to keep a snake in the house to organically handle the mice...

Uh-h... No personal experience...

Unfortunately Mike, we financed the construction on a house that ended up filling up with snakes!!! It was on the national news and everything. The owners of another house with snakes (in the same part of the state) had the same problem as they went in to the basement and pulled on what they thought was the string to the light, it wasnt and started to move on its own. Apparently when you get a snake infestation (deadly snakes or not) the "musky" smell is unbearable.

Look at the positive side of snakes over mice, at least with a snake bite you die quickly!

Susan, great story.  It is always a challenge to get rid of unwanted guests of the rodent family!

Mike - OH Mike I am not so sure of that one. Do you own a pet snake?

Jeff - Oh the thoughts that are running through my mind now are unbelievable.

Diane - yes it is a challenge.
