You might be surprised to discover that the Texas State Comptroller's office has a check with your name on it.  From utility deposits to payroll checks to jewlery and stock certificates stashed away in a forgotten lock box, unclaimed and abandoned property is surrendered to the State Comptroller's office waiting to be claimed.  Click here to perform a FREE search.

DON'T BE FOOLED!

It is so easy to search for unclimed property that many companies exist that will charge you a fee to assist with the claims process.  There is no charge for a search and the claims process is easy!

If you have ever moved, changed jobs, bank accounts or spouses, you are a simple internet search away from discovering if you have left anything important behind.  Surviving spouses and children should perform searches as well. It's not unheard of that a spouse maintains an account that a surviving spouse may not be aware of.

Tips for searching for Unclaimed Property

  • Use variations of the spelling of your name.
  • Don't forget to search by your maiden name and all married names if applicable.
  • Perform a search for friends, neighbors and relatives.  It's always fun to share the good news!
  • You can search by business names for unclaimed company property as well.
  • If you aren't a native of Dallas or Fort Worth Texas, be sure to check with the Comptroller's office of all states you have lived in previously.

****I'd love to hear from you if you find what you didn't know you were looking for!****

Amanda, I have spelled my name every way to spell it and I can't seem to shake a cent out of their pockets! LOL

I do know someone who found quite a bit of money once so it can happen!

Amanda, this is great consumer information, especially the part about not using companies that charge for this service.  Great job!

LINDA--Be sure to do a search for not only yourself, but clients, friends and loved ones.  I do it every 6 months and every time I do it, I find something for someone.  (Because you are in my network, I search for you as well! I'd love to call you up one of these days and tell you I found your money!)

LISA--Residents of New Orleans should definitely be performing searches. Here is the link to Louisianna's Unclaimed Property division:

LINDA--No way would I accept a finders fee--unless I found you a million bucks!  In that case, lunch is on you!

Amanda,

If they have any of my money, you can have it.  Send over the disclaimer, and I'll sign.

MIKE--I have never asked for anything in return when I've found someone's loot, but I have received flowers before! I go through my contact database and take a quick look at the appropriate states for my clients and contacts.  It takes about 2 hours per year of my time and that's it!  With clients, the most likely find is forgotten utility deposits.  The most likely people to have left something behind are the ones who move to other states.  You can search most states online (if not all by now).

Here's the link to Arizona so that you can take a look-see around for you and anyone you know.  Thanks for stopping by!

Every year, the Washington Post publishes a list of names of people with unclaimed property waiting for them.  I hadn't thought to check any of my aliases.

HUGH--Well how about that!  I've found a lot of familiar names over the years.  Be sure to check the IRS and HUD sites as well.  You never know!
