After sifting through 7,000 studies over the last 5 years, researchers with the American Institute for Cancer Research have confirmed (with overwhelming data) that excess body fat increases risks for all kinds of cancer: colon, kidney, pancreas, uterus, breast, and esophagus. In the 517 page report released by the AICR in November there were 8 recommendations for change, 6 of which dealing with diet. This comes as no surprise but is good reinforcement and motivation to change our habits.
1. Limit consumption of "energy-dense foods," foods that are high in calories, fat and sugar. (Soft drinks are bad!)
2. Eat mostly foods of plant origin, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and beans
3. Limit intake of red meat and avoid processed meat (Atkins' dieters??)
4. Limit alcoholic drinks to one per day for women, two per day for men
5. Limit consumption of salt. Avoid moldy grains or legumes
6. Aim to meet nutritional needs through diet alone, without dietary supplement
If your diet is heavy in all of these then this year pick one or two and slowly remove them from your lifestyle. It's your choice and cancer is not the way I want to go out. Let it be while scaling a mountain or battling white water rapids. I will die on my own terms and not taken slowly by a disease that I helped infest my body. It's your choice what you allow to enter your body. What will you choose?
Easier said than done.
Have a good New Year.
