Encinitas, California Workshop On Housing Development Gets Good Turn
Out.
About 200 people participated Monday night in an
Encinitas city mapping exercise designed to identify places where
high-density housing
might be build in the decades to come. Some participants agonized over
their advisory decisions, trying to create a way for all five
communities of Encinitas to absorb the same amount of future growth.
Participants deliberated over where they should place the blue "growth"
stickers on the maps that they had each been given as part of the
exercise. Others
didn't want the growth near their homes.
Another man said that none of his sticker was going to go anywhere near
the Leucadia portion of Vulcan Avenue saying that the road cannot
handle the traffic congestion it already has. The housing exercise on Monday night was the
first of two free public workshops city officials are hosting as
they continue their multi year effort to overhaul the city's general
plan. A massive state-required document that spell out how Encinitas
will handle everything from traffic congestion to low-income housing
needs in the decades to come. The most contentious part of the project
has been updating the city's housing element-a plan that details where
new apartments and sing-family homes will go.
