Most of you don’t know this about me but I am also a youth basketball coach. Five years ago I opened up a youth basketball organization called North Sound Elite. My son and I opened North South Elite because we coached at a couple of other AAU organizations in WashingtonState that we didn’t like, that didn’t make the kids better, or give them a better chance to get to college. By this point in the post you are probably wondering what North Sound Elite has to do with my real estate business…. That’s a great question, one that is very important to not just me but to the kids that I coach.
Although North Sound is a non-profit organization there is still some money that parents need to pay. The reason it is a non-profit is because I don’t collect any extra money to pay the coaches, myself, or my administrators. I don’t make any money from coaching my teams. The problem with that is that the parents are responsible for all of the tournament, hotel, and other fees. To some people the costs of AAU basketball isn’t such a big deal but I have kids with real talent whose parents might have lost their job, or are a single-parent, or have more than one kid in the program. I try to scholarship as may kids as possible but we don’t collect enough money for me to allow parents not to pay… What people don’t understand is that North Sound doesn’t have thousands of extra dollars in the account, I am not a millionaire, and we only collect needs to be paid out so every time a parent doesn’t pay, they are stealing that money from a different team, from a different child.
I decided that every time I sell a house I will donate 5% of the profits to North Sound Elite. I want every child who has the will, the drive, and the talent to go to college and play to have that opportunity. Ever since I told the people at North sound what I am going to be doing they have been very helpful. They have been generating some leads, referring me to friends and family; ever since then my real estate business has been much better. I have also been able to work with a lot more families and have been able to keep a lot of good kids in the program.
