The Home You Buy Will Hopefully be the Setting for Many Good Memories.

No one buys a home thinking that it will be a disappointment.  Buying a home is a new beginning, looking to the future, planning.  Yet we know that the future is not always bright and beautiful.  Sometimes there are rough spots in our lives.

This is one way to think about what's important when you're shopping for a home.  So with that in mind, let's make a  list of possible things to think about while shopping for a home.  Let's do everything we can to have only good memories made in that new home!

  • Don't buy more house than you really can afford.  Just because you pre-qualled for a certain amount doesn't mean that you have to spend that much.   Stay within a budget that you comfortable in.  Stress caused by trying to make that payment that is just a tad larger than you would have liked is not conducive to good memories.

  • Imagine yourself living, not only in the house, but in the neighborhood.  You cannot ignore the neighborhood around you once you move into your new home.  You will be a part of that neighborhood.  Drive the neighborhood.  Check out distances to work, school, shopping, medical care.  Do you neighbors care for their lawns and homes... keep their dogs in check etc.. Really imagine that you live there.  Visit the neighborhood at different hours of the day.  You may be surprised that it gets louder or busier at certain times.

  • Are you buying and planning to change the home right away because you like it BUT there are things you don't like?  Get estimates on what it's going to take to change the house AND find out permits that would be required.  BEFORE you purchase.

  • Think about YOUR FAMILY.  Yes, it's a good to shop without little ones.. BUT I strongly suggest that after you've decided on which one, bring school age children to see the home BEFORE you purchase.  Talk about which rooms will be theirs and the good times you are planning on having in the home.  Let them get the feel for the house and think about it.  You'll be surprised at what can come out of the mouths of babes (but then again maybe you won't be surprised... you're a parent).

  • Remember that the memories associated with that house actually begin with the buying process.  So before you start shopping, make sure you're working with a real estate agent that you like and that will take care of you.  Later, after you've been in the home for many years, you will remember the good and/or bad associated with buying that home.. so start out by making good memories from square one with a good agent.

  • With all of that said, if you're shopping for a home or land in Southeast Oklahoma, please give me a call and let's talk about what's available and what your needs are.  Let's find you that home to make those good memories in!

Judi, bringing the children to see the house before purchasing it is also a good advice. Sometimes, you'll be surprised on what they think. I also like the photo you inserted in your blog. It brings out positive perspectives!

Warm regards,

Regina P. Brown

Judi -- a must read for every home buyer.   If at all possible, I believe a home buyer needs to look at a house more than once before making their offer -- at the first look buyers may become mesmerized by the home and the second look can provide some much needed perspective.   Look at the neighborhood too at different times/days --- you are not just buying a house you want a home in a neighborhood where you can see yourself as part of the community.   Congrats on the feature -- well deserved.

Judi - I still remember the first house I bought - the price, the payments, the ugrading and improving.  And yes, there are loads of fond memories.  We sold it years ago, but a couple of years ago, it came back on the market.  I was fortunate enough to go through it once again and relive every nook and cranny within its walls.  The current seller had done extensive renovation, and the house was in tip-top shape.  I almost wanted to buy it all over again!

Great post Judi! If buyers follow your advice they will definitely be setting themselves up for maximum enjoyment in their new home. I especially like your tip of imagining oneself living not just the home, but the neighborhood too.

Judi,

Great Blog! with great pointers and tips for buyers.  I always suggest they drive through the neighborhood in the evening and weekend if possible to see what the neighborhood is like "after" hours.

Judi - I think many people have decided that buying more than you can afford is just not the best idea.

Judi:  Those are good guidelines.  I know people who bought homes way above their needs and means and then could not furnish the home and closed off several rooms.

Morning Judi,  Just closed on a home where the seller had resided for 30+ years with many happy memories.  I asked her if she was ready to move on and she answered: "  We've had so many wonderful memories here.  Now it's time for the next family to have theirs! "  This was an emotionally tough one.

Hi Judi, every home I have ever bought was looked at always as where would the Christmas tree go. Even if it was summertime. And all because of the family gatherings and the memories.

Oh, Judi, You are right on target... This was the reason why I became a realtor in the first place. Our realtor wasn't what we expected her to be.

I am trying my best in helping people to find their dream homes and create great memory about the process.

 Have a great weekend.

You are so, so right. The home has to feel right and fit the kind of people you are. It's so important to remember the emotional aspect of the home you'll life your life in.
