Elk River’s Volunteer of the Month for April is John Weicht.  This honor is especially important because Mr. Weicht is elderly and gravely ill.  His children accepted the award on behalf of their father and read a statement.

“After 64 years of living in Elk River I’m thankful to have lived here. Elk River has been so good to me I feel I’ve needed to give back. The more you give the easier it is to give. My one regret is that I won’t be around any longer to continue giving.”

Doesn’t that hit you?

He was honored at the Monday, May 7, Elk River City Council meeting. In honoring Weicht, the Mayor John Dietz listed some of his volunteer contributions including:

•Took volunteer shifts at the Business Expo and Fourth of July celebration for many years.

•Served on the board of the Elk River Lions, including a term as president.

•Hosted four Lions Youth Exchange students.

•Worked at graduation parties, local festivals and parades and served as a youth sports coach.

•Donated the contracting fee and helped secure volunteer labor and materials to build Lions Park Center for well below cost.

•Served on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Elk River. Helped coordinate construction of their building.

•Long-time board member for the Land of Lakes Choirboys.

•Lions awards he has won include Lion of the Year, Melvin Jones Fellowship and Distinguished Leadership Award.

•Past winner of the Three Rivers Community Foundation’s Hall of Fame Leadership Award.

Let's hear it for John Weicht!  And, I wish him and his family peace and serenity in these final days.
