How much lumber can come from a tree log?

Depends on how you cut it.

lumber cuts from a log

We have all seen stacks of lumber and all the different types. Have you ever wondered how the boards were cut from the logs? You may be surprised how the logs are divided up into so many different lumber cuts. This photo shows how lumber is cut from a log at the lumber mill. I found it interesting to see.

Interesting.... I read your blogs because I am always learning something... I actually took wood-shop in HS for half of a half semester... LOL~ I think I was the only girl in there, but then I transferred schools and they didn't offer it.

I always wondered how they cut the logs to get the maximum amount of lumber from them.  This is very interesting as I would have never guessed how this would all be divided up.  Thanks for some great information.

yes, this really is interesting to see. It's also interesting when I look at hardwood to think about how it was cut to get that graining.

Tom never had a clue that the log was cut in a certain way to produce the chips, the bark etc. Very interesting article!

Tom, It actually pretty cool how they do that today. Most mills are all computerized will scan the log and then produce the cuts that will generate the most boards.

Great illustrations of the the cuts.

That's pretty amazin' stuff, Tom!  I must admit I had never considered what would come out of a log once it was sent to the lumber mill.  It's kind of like when I pick up hickens all Safeway wrapped at the grocery store.  I don't want to know what that chicken went through before I paid for it at the checkout stand:-)  BUT lumber isn't quite as traumatic as all that:-)  I hope you have a GREAT weekend!

The diagram was very useful in showing how lumber is taken from the log. Not too much waste is there Leilani.

The use of a computer can help in customizing the order Donald. If I need some special boards made, the computer can easily optimize the remaining lumber.

Lumber is less traumatic Myrl. I notice that when I drive behind a logging truck in Sacramento, I mentally divid the log into various sizes.  :)
