It says CASE on the left hand side of the boiler.  Don't call it a tractor.  The Case company called it a Steam Traction Machine.

This one was made somewhere between 1892 and 1920.  The owner could have told me, but he wasn't home.

I took the photo in Lower Bank, NJ, across the street from a little white church my Darlin' and I visited with her parents.

The Traction Machine ran on steam, and could burn coal, wood and straw.  By 1920, you could add a modification which would let it burn oil.

Depending on the model, these behemoths weighed in around 20,000 pounds before adding water to create the steam.

The home itself is nice enough, but I didn't take a picture.  The machine stole the show.  If you find yourself traveling through Green Bank, NJ, (near Batsto) detour a little south to Lower Bank and ask where the tractor is.  They'll know.  They're pretty proud of it.

Isn't history wonderful!?

I'll probably never get up there to see that one but I love stopping in at all those little roadside antique stores.

Georgina,

It could pull the largest thresher available at the time, also made by Case, and has a top speed of 2 1/2 mph.

Mary Ellen,

Isn't it amazing what can be found when you get off the interstate?

Eric,

Thanks for being the first to comment.  This Case ought to be in a museum!

Mike - This gives new meaning to the expression, "don't run out of steam."

Like the tractor.  It might fit in well around here on display on the farm.  Thanks for posting.

Matt,

Thanks!  Me too.  Happy New Year to you, and I wish you much success!

Friend Charles,

Thanks for coming by to comment!

Judi,

I wonder if the tractor is worth more than the house!

Gail,

The farm that could afford it in 1892 must have been a going concern!

Happy New Yar Mike!

What a fun photo.  Don't you just love road trips?  What a great way to discover new things and spend time with your darlin' and learning more about each other.

Figures a guy from Tucson AZ would take great NJ photos!

Is this a piece of farm machinery? What was it meant to pull??

Very cool. I have photos of several similar "trains" in Michigan and one here in Florida. Those old engines and cars are so cool!

Just like everything tractor technology has come a long way. So NJ is a long way from AZ were you on vacation?

Marchel,

Grandkids are a big pull!  We have four in NJ.  Darlin's parents live there too, so we get back a few times each year.

Lisa H,

Write a post.  I'll come see your trains!

Lisa R,

Google "Case traction machines."  They're the precursors of today's modern tractors and combines.  Thanks for commenting!

Marlene,

Happy New Year to you!  We do love going back to see the grandkids.  They're coming west in a couple of months.  We're teaching them to reciprocate.  LOL
