Colorado Passes Toughest Illegal Immigrant Laws in the Country

I have a Mexican housekeeper that I know is illegal.  So is her husband.  A few months ago he lost his job with a landscaping company because they were afraid of having an illegal on their pay rolls.  During that period, he helped his wife clean houses.  After a couple of months, the landscaping company called him back to work.  I know he probably is an excellent employee.  He worked very hard at our house and at one point  proudly showed me a very dog eared letter of commendation that his employer had written about the quality of his work.

Yesterday Rosa confided to me that she is very scared.  It seems as during the time the company had laid Jose off, they had gotten seriously behind in their mortgage payments.  They have three children.  Today I had Rosa bring me her loan number and mortgage company's 800 number.  I don't know how much help I can be.  I told her to come to my house tomorrow morning so that she can tell the lender to talk candidly with me.

By now you are probably asking how in the world can two illegals get a home mortgage?  Pretty easy when you have unethical lenders that up until now have been totally UNREGULATED in Colorado.  That is not a typo.  Finally legislation is catching up with these people.  Unfortunately, all too often I have seen real estate agents and lenders prey on the very people of their own race.  Because there is no language barrier, they tend to trust these scurrilous people.

Colorado has recently passed the toughest legislation in the country on illegal immigrants.  Only minor children will be eligible for public medical assistance.  Rosa said that they may just have to return to Mexico.  The end of their American dream?  They so wanted a better life for their family.  They are very honest and hard working.  It is so sad for people to have experienced our way of life only to have it taken away.  They simply should never have been allowed into our country in the first place.

The sadness is in your last statement.  They should be allowed here, but only after going through all of the paperwork required.  This is one of the most troubling questions of our time.  We all know someone who is a success despite sneaking into our country and I thin most of us know a family that is struggling to make ends meet and is only here because here is where there is life.  I believe that humans are animals, and science backs that up.  But in a way we are like plants in that Plants always grow and move towards the rays of the sun.  There there is life and there we will move.

Our borders are porous and need to be tightened.  With every 3 families comes a common criminal, with every 6 a child  molester or rapist.  While I want the hard workers to have the opportunities, I want my children to have what I had.

I believe the proverbial chickens are finally coming home to roost on the illegal aliens issue.

The cold hard facts are both your housekeeper and her husband broke the laws in sneaking into this country illegally.

If you're truly concerned about them why not help them get legal???

I'm all for immigrants; after all that's that this country is all about, but legal immigrants, not the illegal variety.

Jim, I listen to everything you say.  How in the world would I go about helping them become legal.  This state has taken a very hard stand on the illegals.  I am afraid their home and the dreams that went with it will become one more Colorado foreclosure statistic.  I'd sure like to know how I can help them become legal.  They did manage to have their children born here.

"children born here" could be the key to getting them legal.

If their children were born in this county then the children are automatically US citizens; such children are known as "anchor babies".

"Each year, thousands of women enter the United States illegally to give birth, knowing that their child will thus have U.S. citizenship. Their children immediately qualify for a slew of federal, state, and local benefit programs. In addition, when the children turn 21, they can sponsor the immigration of other relatives, becoming "anchor babies" for an entire clan.

"an entire clan." i.e. Rosa and Papa.

Bonnie, I agree with you on this.  It's a sad story.

This is a sad story.

FYI I have one of a few legal programs that does allow for a undocumented resident taxpayer residence to obtain a mortgage.  As long as there is buyer has files tax returns in the past two years and a few more qualifications they can get a nice 5-1 ARM.

Bonnie:

Indeed a sad story, but for every hard-working, "honest" illegal immigrant displaced because they broke the law story, I can easily find another where an illegal immigrant has committed other felonies and created equally sad stories for their victims.

The only sure-fire method for creating a happy immigration story is to persue immigration legally; the channels are vast and complex - but they work. There are many happy stories that are never told because, well - they did it legally.

There are perfectly legal loan programs for undocumented aliens in Colorado. These loans go by the name ITIN, for the taxpayer ID number that non-citizens must have to have a job, pay taxes, etc. Perhaps the loan that they got for their home was under such a program, and not the work of a sleazy, corner-cutting lender??

I also wanted to comment on the thought that you can help them to become "legal." Good luck. The system does not work. It is a total mess. The reason why there are so many illegal aliens in our society is because the immigration system is such a shambles.

This recent crackdown on illegals is just the flavor of the month, in my opinion. This country of ours and our economy relies on these undocumented workers. As a whole, these millions of "illegal" inhabitants of our country contribute a whole lot more to it than they take from it. Most people don't see it this way, alas.
