If you grow up with sandy beaches of Florida or sunshine most of the time and never rains in southern California as the song says, snow is a foreign unknown. Sure, everyone knows Santa thrives in it at the North Pole, but what is it like to have a winter with snowfall? In Northern Maine, everyone from kids to the oldest folks in Aroostook County get excited and enjoy the beauty of the season. Luckily, we have the equipment to move the white fulffy snow no matter how much we get at one time. There are not a zillion cars like a city would have so unlike Boston or Providence, trying to plow and remove snow during winter is not as hard. Plus in Northern Maine, wet freezing rain that makes you damp does NOT happen. We get a dry snow..just snow. No humidity winter I call it..like the humidity of comparing Florida around Miami to Arizona around Tuscon. Dry heat...dry cold dynamic. That's why today, the day after 14 inches in Houlton, Maine area, one son home from college strapped on his skis and with three friends are on their way to Mars Hill Mountain to ski "Big Rock". Last week another son with his friends zipped to "Crabbe Mountain" in Upper Haynesville, New Brunswick. A trek to Sugarloaf Mountain requires more than a day trip but is one of the King of Ski Mountains in Maine. Sugarloaf reports more than 32 inches of snow in last week alone! Other winter sports? Well, my secretary's husband Hadley is off ice fishing with their son on the weekends on many area frozen lakes. Snowsledders in southern New England are caravanning by groves to sample the new snow on the 3500 miles of groomed trails in Aroostook County. Removing Maine snow is taken in stride and this video on You Tube from Jan 2nd shows how Houlton folks deal with it. Today is crystal clear, bright sunshine, no wind, and blue blue sky to enjoy the scenery as folks cross country ski, snowshoe and head to the outdoor skating rinks. Northern Maine has four distinct seasons and all are enjoyed with outdoor recreational opportunities. In fact, some folks climb and camp out at Baxter State Park and Mt Katahdin in the middle of winter when the black flies are hibernating! No one in Maine is afraid to go outdoors and dress for the season to stay toasty warm.
