My Mom passed away a dozen years ago now, but I still think of her every day.  I still live a good part of my life in ways that I feel would make her proud, although she was always proud of me and supportive no matter what I did.  She is the one who inspired my love for the town she called "My beautiful Fair Oaks."

My Mom, Frances BecherShe was super smart and very creative, a wonderful writer and artist, and the most organized person I have ever known - and made it all look effortless.

She was sharp and in pretty good health until she got pneumonia and tried to fight it off, but after a month on oxygen, she was feeling better but a little weak so she had Dad make up the sofa bed for her in the family room.

One morning she got the newspaper, completed the Times crossword puzzle, went to the bathroom, came out and said, "Yippee!  I've lost five pounds!" Then she laid down and went to sleep.  Dad was right there reading the paper in his chair when he realized her breathing had just stopped.  He called an ambulance, but although they got her to the hospital, she died as soon as they arrived.

Every Mothers Day I slip away to the cemetery and have a little
DJ Martin, Jon's Mom conversation with her.  Of course I drop by other times too, but always on Mothers Day.  Happy Mothers Day to Frances Becher, my Mom.

This is the first Mothers' Day for my husband Jon since his mother passed away, and I think it is hitting him a lot harder than he is letting on.  She had slipped away over the last few years from Alzheimers, so he feels his loss was gradual and he had more time to get used to losing her, but this Mothers Day it has hit him that he will never again make that Happy Mothers Day call or buy that card or send those flowers.

She was a special lady and I had the pleasure of enjoying her affection and witty sense of humor, and her talent at the piano and organ, for many years.  She too was a fan of crossword puzzles, although the last few years they were impossible for her as she had no short term memory.
I miss her smile.  Happy Mothers Day Dorothy Jean "DJ" Martin.
My girls, Colleen and Cathy
I have dug out some of the old photos from before either of our mothers began to fail, and those happy times are great memories.  These are a couple of our favorites.

We love you, Moms.

If you are fortunate to have your mom or other family members still alive, I hope you will let them know how much you love them and how important they are to you, even if you don't see them often.  All too soon it could be over, and y
ou will be glad you did.

I don't get to see my daughters as often as I'd like, since they live in other states, but we do text, and whenever I get a phone call, it makes my day.

Susan this is a beautiful tribute to both Mom's!  I have a feelling they're both with you more than we all think.  Sometimes I can tell when my Mom is playing......I can feel her like she's right her. Do you ever have that feeling?

Hi Anna - What startles me most is that sometimes when I look in the mirror, for a second I think it's her, and then I realize it's me.  When my uncle was dying, he thought I was my mom, so I guess I am starting to look more like her.

But I do feel like both she and my dad are here sometimes.  Of course we bought their home out of probate, so there will always be a part of them here.

Susan, this is a superb tribute post on Mother's Day and your We Love You, Moms says it all. How fast your Mom slipped away to for you Susan and you described it so well I felt the sting too. Know she really loved you Susan as I can feel it from your most moving words.

Thank you Gary.  Jon and I were both pretty fortunate to have the moms we did.

Susan, what a wonderful tribute to the mom's in your life that have since passed on - although gone, definitely not forgotten.
