Our Mom's Day Tradition in Alaska-Yard Work

Many years ago, my mum came up with a plan for Mothers Day. She decided that she didn't need anymore 'stuff' but she could use some yard work. Genius! So, every year on Mothers Day, the family gets together with rakes, shovels and some elbow grease and we clean up mums yard.

Alaska is still a bit behind this time of year for green grass and flowers so Mothers Day makes for a great start to our summer.

Through the years we have raked an untold number of leaves, filled countless lawn bags and planted trees (or whatever else needs planting). Once, we all attempted to build a greenhouse for her. Unfortunately it resembles more of a clay pot made in grade school than a professionally built greenhouse...It is a little lopsided but she loves it anyway.

What a great way to celebrate Mother's Day!  It beats going to a restaurant.  I'm sure mom is so happy to not only have her family all around but leaving her with a stunning yard!

Hi Paula, we have some different ones but you can always count on laughter when we all get together. Someone is always teasing, playing pranks or telling stories of past get togethers.

Mothers Day 2012 at the Henley House

Even when I was trying to get a photo of my folks together, in jumps one of my sisters for an impromptu silly session. Pop even had 'bunny ears' on my mum.

Maybe it is the silly factor that they have been married 53 years, the silly sis in the background just celebrated her and her hubby's 24th anniversary, our other sis is going on 28 years of marriage, one brother is right behind Larry and me (by a day) at 16 years married and the other brother is at 52 years single.

All our traditions involve laughter-THAT is for sure!

Hi there Joan, this year mum cheated and had landscapers over (before we got there) so we wouldn't have to be outside and we could visit. The pics above were from previous years. It has been a little cold and windy this past week so she thought she would save us from the chill and sore muscles I guess. Stinker! We still had a really nice time though.
