2008 is widely predicted to be a year of economic stress in American Households.

When considering your budget for 2008, if charitable contributions are an item being reviewed, you'll be pleased to know that you can still budget to help others in need. It's a budget and a gift of your time.

There are 8760 hours per year.
1 hour every 56 days is all it takes.
6 hours of your time each year saves 18 lives per year.

It's all about the blood. It's the blood that is the river of life and the river isn't flowing like it should.

60% of Americans are eligible to donate blood. 5% of them donate.

17% of non-donors say they don't think to donate blood. THINK.

15% of non-donors say they don't have time. 4.5 Million Americans are out of time.

Burn Victims, Cancer Patients, Accident Victims, Sickle Cell Patients and Premature Babies need Blood Transfusions and platelets just to survive. Patients that are Anemic or need Organ Transplants need Blood Transfusions just to survive. Heart Attacks often lead to surgery that requires Blood Transfusions just to survive.

Amanda- You put this into such easy to understand terms.....and really took away most excuses :) Now, I do know that there are some of us that cannot donate for various reasons.....but for the rest.....yep, this is an important, free way to give life to another.

KATHY--40% of Americans aren't eligible to donate blood. Of the 60% that are, only 5% donate. It's sad because the 40% that aren't eligible are the most likely candidates to need a transfusion or platelets at some time in the future. I'm furtunate to be part of the group that can and will.

According to Carter Blood Care, when you donate blood you lose a pound!! That's one of the reasons why people who are otherwise healthy but weigh less than 110 pounds are ineligible to donate. More incentive to donate blood for those that can and will.

Did you know that when you donate blood, 14 tests are performed, 11 of which are for infectious diseases and cholesterol levels are checked as well? More incentive to donate blood and obtain a mini-physical for those that can and will.

I'm a regular donor! One of my goals for 2008 is to organize and sponsor a community blood drive in the Spring before the Summer rush for blood begins. Blood is my official "cause" for 2008.

AMANDA - I have donated in the past, but not recently. However, I do think that it's a great idea, and I will look into it. My father-in-law donates constantly (as often as he can). He even does platelets, which take hours at a time to donate. I have featured this in Active Rain Addicts.

Amanda: I recently wrote a blog on donating to the American Red Cross...you've done some a better job than I! I can't donate any more, but strongly encourage people to. If it weren't for blood donations, I wouldn't be alive today! But, don't hold that against the Red Cross!

Amanda, Thanks for this call to donate blood. It is so important and blood supplies are constantly low. I've been a blood donor for the past 6 years, 5 times faithfully each year. Our Masonic Lodge runs a blood donor program with the Red Cross and hosts 5 drives a year. I often show up early and stay late to help set up and cook breakfast for the other donors. I can't think of any other charitable act that gives so much of yourself and helps so many and doesn't cost a dime!

Steve--You are one of the reasons for the blog. I read your blog a few weeks ago telling the story of what you went through this year (feel free to post your link btw) and it inspired me to jump in and make the decision not to just donate but to "Blog for a Cause", if you will. Blood is the river of life and in the medical community, it is the most common denominator.

Great post, Amanda. I used to give blood and would love to begin again. Unfortunately, because I lived in England in the late 80's, I may expose recipients in some mysterious way to Mad Cow Disease. I mentioned this in a previous post on a related topic. This is why Dave's comment on my associate page mentions mad and horns!

Hi Vanessa, thanks for stopping by. I located a recent article about the dangerously low blood supply in Middle Tennessee and what the American Red Cross is doing about it. There are dozens of blood drives scheduled in the very near future in your area. Please help spread the word about blood.

Amanda, Just thought I would pop in to say "hello" I am also a regular donor. The Red Cross calls me as soon as I am able to donate again. They call me at home,work and on my cell phone. Thats ok, its nice to feel wanted, ha! I always tell them that they should tell people they lose a pound when they donate...that would "line em up" When people who can donate don't I wonder why, what would happen if they (or one of their family members) needed blood? So people get out and donate some blood. Please!

I barely have enough blood as it is. Not only that but I am cold 'all' the time.

Doc says not to give away my blood. I need it for something :)

Amanda: We couldn't ask for a better supporter! FYI: The math was recently updated this past summer.The University of Minnesota reports that nationally only 37% of the United States population is eligible to give blood. And of that 37% only 4% actually give.

It takes folks like you giving blood, giving your time and talking about it to make the difference in our patients' lives. Thank you!

The title cracked me up. Even though I read it before and knew what your post was, it meant something different after reading the highly passionate post on Silent Majority.

Amanda~I so truly love the feeling that I have in my heart after giving back. This past November I sponsored my first blood drive and how incredibly addicting that is. I'm so impressed with your passion of giving back and your example will prove to help many throughout AR and your community. Have a wonderful week!

Amanda - Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention. After a ten year lapse, I started donating blood again three years ago and now I don't miss a blood drive. It's easy, painless, and doesn't take too much time. It also helps me eat my veggies so I can be sure to get enough iron - I don't want to have to miss out due to low iron.
