Horse And CatWe all have to get started with a conversation with someone new even if they are quite unlike us. Some non threatening topics to break the ice, discuss:

  • the weather
  • compliment their clothing, hair style or some jewelry without into a sexual harassment category
  • ask about something in common you may have with them, kids, job, hobbies
  • throw out some humor and get the conversation started with a laugh
  • ask some open ended questions about what do you think about something, sports, local economy, current news without judging

That should be a start. Avoid politics, hot debated topics or religion. You don't know anyone right off the bat to see where they stand on any of that.

Once a conversation gets going see if they are more the talker type or the listener type. If talker for them just ask short questions back. If they are the listener type, you talk and see if they are in agreement or differing viewpoint than yours and go down those paths of agreement. Sprinkle in LOTS of humor. Almost any kind of stress is completely broken up with humor. Maintain warm eye contact showing true sincerity and interest in another.

Yes we all can be different as individuals but we have more in common with most people than you would think.

Yes, always break the ice with comments you mentioned or their car, compliment their family, ask where they bought the great shirt, skirt or shoes and how much you like. But never start with business talk. A good repoire goes a long way.

I find a common area and start from there, it is easy to find you just have to look.

Weather is always a good way to start the conversation, asking open ended question is good, but the non-judging part is hard! :-)

The sooner we can find something in common the sooner and easier it is to talk with people and make friends

Gary - whenever I'm in a tense situation I love to use humor to diffuse it and everyone loves to laugh. As usual, great words of wisdom. Love the photo and even though the cat is so small he doesn't seem the least bit intimidated by the horse.

Gary, this is a wonderful post with some great suggestions for casual conversation! Looking at Hannah's comment above maybe a good addition would be, "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!"
