Dress for Success, Dallas Real Estate Ashley CoxMore and more, 'dress for success' seems to be a term that's thrown by the wayside. Watching television shows like the recently popular Mad Men, I'm thrown through a loop while out and about, seeing shorter and shorter hemlines and graphic tee's on girls and guys. Are the days of class and debonaire gone? Or are we just in need of a refresher?

Impress the Masses: What does your boss typically wear? What do the clients you serve wear? If both parties are wearing a suit jacket, you might need to meet their level of attire and leave the jeans at home.

Hold Back a Bit: Anything revealing, frumpy, stained or "busy" with patterns and scripted type (think 'Affliction' tees) might be better left for your weekend wardrobe. Meetings are sometimes unexpected, and it's best to be prepared for surprise moments. And if it has a hint of vulgarity, don't even think about it…

When in doubt, Dress UP!  I always tell friends that it's better to arrive over-dressed than underdressed. Making a good impression sometimes means looking like you have it all together! Creating your own style and consistency with dressing up is key, and will leave a great, lasting impression in the minds of clients, coworkers and higher-ups.

If you feel risky wearing something, it probably isn't a good idea. And remember that buying quality over quantity is key for creating a lasting, loved-throughout-the-year wardrobe for your life as an adult.

I write this, not as a How-To for those that are already in the business, but for those that are curious and to serve as a reminder for those newly initiated into the world of meetings, making first impressions and joining at Starbucks for more than just a cup of java.
