If I'm talking to you, Miriam-Webster would define you as either:
(a) A bushy-tailed rodent that hoards food and miscellaneous objects, or
(b) A person who collects or hoards especially unneeded items
Many of us admit to being "pack rats" to some degree or another. We have lots of "stuff", and unless you're super organized, it can sure pile up.
When you're ready to put your home on the market, you may want to consider off-site storage for some of your belongings. We all knkow that in order to showcase your home in it's very best light, you want to create a spacious, uncluttered look. The more "floor space" the better.
There are many storage facilities in the Louisville area. Where we specialize, in Oldham County, there are several, and located at just about every corner of the county. Here are a few helpful tips for choosing a facility and protecting your property:
1. Plan ahead. Before you place your home on the market, start shopping around to find the facility that best meets your needs such as storage size, price, accessibility and security.
2. What size unit will you need? For instance, a 10' x 25' unit is about the size of a one-car garage. Tell the representative what items you're planning to store and he or she will help you decide what size is best for you.
3. Inspect both the facility and the unit for proper maintenance. Is it clean? Are your belongings well protected from humidity? Is the door sealed tightly so that rain and snow can't get in?
4. How about security? Ask if there is a guard on duty. Is there video surveillance or an alarm system in place? Are there plenty of security lights? What locking system is used to secure the door?
5. Talk to your homeowner's insurance representative to make sure that you are covered in the event of damage or theft. Most storage centers will not assume responsibility for your belongings.
6. Read the rental agreement very carefully. Are you renting on a month-to-month basis or are you responsible for a longer lease period? Is there a deposit? How do you get your deposit back at the end of the lease period? How much notice do you need to give when you're ready to terminate the lease? Does it need to be in writing?
7. Be sure to label your boxes by numbers rather than content. Make a master inventory list detailing what is in each box. Also make a list of furniture and other unpacked items.
8. Only use newspaper as packing paper if you are packing items that won't be damaged by newsprint.
9. Before you move your things in, place plastic on the floor of the unit. If you will be moving in large furniture, put down blankets or sheets as well. You may also want to place sheets over your furniture to further protect them.
10. Store your most valuable possessions toward the back, and things you may need to get to from time-to-time toward the front.
11. Make sure you leave a walkway so you can get to your things. Also leave a small space between your belongings and the walls of the storage unit.
A little planning ahead before you rent a storage unit will go a long way to ensure your belongs will be safe and secure.
