Growing up in Springfield VA meant many a weekend trip with my mom or dad to Fischers Hardware.  The store first opened by the Fischer Family almost 60 years and it was the place to go to find anything you needed for your home.

The store moved a few times over the years and when I was renovating my parents home in the late 90's, Fischers was always my first stop.  The store was small but the staff knew their stuff and would even lend out some tools for the one off jobs like trying to get the drain out of my bathtub.

The Fischer family sold the store in early 2009 to another local family who decided to affiliate with ACE Hardware.  Just a few weeks ago after struggling the new owners have filed for bankruptcy.  On my last visit just before I heard the news I noticed empty shelves and wondered if trouble was afoot.  My first thought was the big box stores had finally run them out of business but it appears it may have been the affiliation with ACE Hardware which has led to the financial problems.

For those of us who grew up with Fischers Hardware the thought of seeing it close it's doors is sad.  This photo is from the original location of the store at the corner of Brandon and Bland Avenue.  I hope the owners are able to keep the doors open. If you are a fan of Fischers Hardware now is the time to stop by and support this long time Springfield small business.

We had a similar demise in our town of a small hardware store. It's sad to see them go, but the big stores are pushing them out.

In this case it appears bad accounting and inventory issues due to their affliation with ACE is the problem.  Sad as this is the one store I can always count on when I need an odd part.

Hi Cindy,

It is sad to see an icon fad away due to bad accounting and inventory issues! It's such a shame to see family run stores run out of steam!

Dorrie it is a shame that the new owners are facing bankruptcy. I hope they can save the store. It would be a loss to the community.

Cindy, the local hardware stores are so cool and just going into some of them is an experience. We have a couple of older stores still around and I know that I can always find exactly what I need by going there and not the big depots, and the help actually know what they are doing.

Al and Peggy hate to see it happen as it's been a go to place for multiple generations of Springfield VA families.

Ed I like the older stores as the staff usually knows what they are talking about when you ask them a question. So many of them have closed in our area. I hope Fischerd can find their way back.

Ellen The new owners have an uphill battle with the financial problems. I do hope the store will survive.

I agree that stores like these need to be supported. Is it the affiliation with ACE or simply poor management. Hopefully someone can take over or the owners can get things straightened out in order to keep the doors open.

Cal-according to the information I've read it may have been financial misrepresentation by ACE on the value of the store when the new owners first decided to associate with them that caused most of the problem.  No matter how it happened it's sad to see a local favorite since the early 1950's in trouble.

It's always sad to see stores go out of business, especially when they thrived in the past. The present economic issues have affected many stores in Phoenix as well.

Hi Cindy, I have some great memories of Springfield VA as I had many friends that I visited while living in Northern VA.  It is indeed sad to see a local store in trouble.

Leolinda-this one is particularly sad to me as it's a store I grew up visiting and am still a patron of.  I hope the new owners can come out of their bankruptcy proceedings and keep this Springfield institution alive.

Rebecca-I grew up within walking distance of Fischers Hardware and the staff were the real deal.  Knew what they were talking about and what you needed to get your job done.
