While visiting a "Native American Festival" yesterday two hawks arrived and began to chase a squirrel at the time I shot these I didn't know the hawks were part of a bird show. They are allowed to "Free Fly". The squirrel escaped, thankfully!

Great close-up photos. Hate the idea of what they are doing, but they are impressive birds!

Jeff, Thanks, me too! Thats the laws of nature tho... I can handle watching a hawk fish no problem, but I couldn't handle it if either one caught the squirrel!

Fran, thanks! I love to share my photos and get feedback on them.

Great photo, I am glad the squirrel got away.  I just don't have the stomach for any type of killing even if it a regular part of nature.

Great close shots of these magnificient hawks.I am not sure but I believe the males are the ones with the more clors. Its pretty hard to take apic of a bird and make it interesting, but this works for me. Also that bird looks pretty tough and well fed!

Thanks Lloyd! I wouldn't want to tangle with one thats for sure! You're right about the male birds have brighter colors, in most cases. I have recently learned the American Bald Eagle aren't like that, the male and female look the same!

Nice close ups - I have a family of red tails living on my property.  They are amazing birds that keep the rodent population in check.  Four years ago I seen the very first hawk and then the year after he found a mate....then there were two.  This year there are about 6.  The birds migrate for 3 months during the winter and always return.......I guess they invited some guest this year.   Fantastic hunters.......

Hi Robert, Thanks :) They are incredible hunters, there are alot of them here in Daytona and sometimes they visit me at my office to fish. I don't like when they get the baby birds though..

Great photos!  They are beautiful birds - even if they are some serious predators!  :)

Very nice - I find the hawk to be one of the most interesting birds - thanks for sharing

Lisa~

What is the HAWK a symbol of in Native American lore? I got thinking about it and how this might be a "message " for you...so I looked it up and sure enough I found..."Hawk: The hawk is the great messenger and observer of the sky. "  Now the fact that you saw more than one, TWO, infact!!!, and were allowed to photograph more than one...I would say that is sheer magic for you ...and all of us! THANKS!!!!!!!

janeAnne, The Hawk is one of my Animal Totems also. I have many photo's of them, and am fortunate in the fact that I see them often here. Two live and fly around my new house constantly. Magic, I like that!

janeAnne & Lysa - The Seattle Seahawks are named after the Native American myth. The Seahawk was supposed to be a giant hawk with a 20' wingspan.

These are great! I know my hawks pretty well but these are so dark with red wing borders and legs. I just looked them up and it looks like they have to be Harris' Hawks. I'd love a second opinion. They are only supposed to be found in S Texas and Arizona. My book says if seen out of that range, they have most likely escaped from a falconer. Anyone?

05/05/2008 01:57 PM by Southport NC Real Estate - Vicki Burton- Buyer's Agent (Loggerhead Realty-Southport, North Carolina)

Hi Vicki, They were not escapees, they were part of a learning show at a festival. They are allowed to fly free to show the folks their beauty. The "falconer" had owls, falcons, the two hawks along with an assortment of other birds I can't remember now. They were beautiful!
