Just look around............they are blooming everywhere and enjoy the fragrant blossoms....just in time for Spokane's 74th Annual Lilac Festival

Spokane Lilacs

Lilacs are hearty blooming shrubs that were introduced to this area in the early 20th century; 1906 as the story goes.  Spokane's parks and gardens became home to many varieties and Spokane earned its nickname the "Lilac City" in 1930.  The word "lilac" doesn't adequately describe the shades of purple reflected in the extensive varieties.  Purple deepens to burgundy, and white as well as pink are quite common.

Did you know.........Lilacs can grow from 6' to 32', have a distinctive aroma, and bloom beautifully when unpruned since their blossoms appear on old wood?  The hardy shrubs survive and thrive in Spokane's warm summer and cold winter climate.

And by the way.....SPOKANE LILAC FESTIVAL WEEK IS UNDERWAY!  It runs May 14-20 and culminates in the  Armed Forces Torchlight Parade which begins at dusk and winds through the heart of the city.  The parade is always the third Saturday in May.  This 74 year tradition draws representatives from branches of the Armed Forces, equestrians, colorful floats, bands, clowns and marching units from communities near and far.  Visitors and residents alike set up chairs early to reserve their favorite spots along the parade route.

A high five goes out to other cities known for their lilac themed events: Hamilton, Ontario; Rochester, NY; Mackinac Island, Michigan; Lombard, Illinois; and Boston, Massachusetts.

lilacsLilac scented goods such as soaps, perfumes and candles mimic that spring fragrance long after the season has ended. Scarves, hats, and jewelry with lilac themes are available in shops around the city.

Today, the lilacs are in full bloom so as you drive in and around Spokane, enjoy their scent as well as their beauty.

A huge thank you goes to those who brought the very first lilacs to Spokane.  It is reported that a couple of those original lilacs are still growing in Browne's Addition.

I can almost smell them from here.  Such a sweet smell.  Hope the festival is a big success.
