This Saturday is National Kids to Parks Day but did you know our National Parks Service makes our parks available to you and your family all year long?  The National Park Service, formed in 1916, cares for our parks......YES!...our parks!  Working with park partners and volunteers, they help to care for and preserve over 84 million acres of land, over 4.5 million acres of lakes, reservoirs and oceans, over Mountains43,000 miles of coastline, 68,561 archaeological sites and much more.

As part of the U.S. Department of the Interior the National Parks Service has over 20,000 employees and almost 2.5 million volunteers.

So with summer approaching why not make plans to visit our parks!  There are passes you can get that will save you money!  The Passes are good at over 2,000 Federal Recreation Sites covering entrance fees at the National Parks and Wildlife Refuges and standard amenity fees at National Forests and grasslands.

The pass covers vehicle fees or up to 4 adults for sites where there is a per person charge. Children under 15 are admitted free.

One wonders if we shouldn't reverse the scenario...spend most of our time in the parks and just occasionally go into the city

I am not sure I have ever been to one. Cool post! How do you find out if there are some near me? Look at the volume of volunteers!

Kathy, great post.  I visited about 5 parks last year.  Our parks are our national treasure.  Great post, great topic.

When my parents retired and began to travel they spent a summer going from park to park all over the country.  I just emailed her to ask if they had the senior lifetime passes.  We have a national park right here in my town, so if they don't they can run over and get them.

I've seen a few, but want to see many many more.

Dorie- I didn’t either, but Larry got a Sr. Pass since he’s out at Arthur R. Marshall every week kayaking!

Bobbie- I never thought of following them on FB...that’s a good idea.

Silvia-I agree... We have Everglades National Park further south that’s included too!

Janis- I know there are some that could cost a family $40 to get in.  If you’re on summer vacation this could save quite a bit of money.

Michael-I love that Military personnel are free.

Roy- this works out great for you since you need plenty of places to go with you camera.

Ed & Tracy- you’re in AZ so I’d bet there are a lot of parks in your area.

BARFF- did you know you have Dayton Aviation Heritage National Park in OH?

Kathy- I remember Yellowstone but it’s been so long ago!

Eric- that’s a great tip!  I bet we haven’t explored all of the parks available in this area..you’re right about that!

Debbie- I think it’s a good deal for anyone over 62.... and it’s a lifetime pass!

Scott- don’t know if you went to Everglades National Park when you were in Florida.

Gary- Pass this info. along to him and please give him our thanks for serving.

Joan-I don’t know how some families do it when they try to go on vacation.  Just the admission prices alone could make a huge dent in the vacation budget.

Irene-be sure to tell your grandson about the free passes for Military personnel.

Robert- you are so right about the value of AR... all you have to do is put a topic in the search bar.

Anthony- have to admit that I got that one from my clip art source but the last one I took at Arthur R Marshall.

Richie-my uncle used to say that we had it all wrong... we should do all of our traveling first while we’re young enough to climb the mountains, etc, and then work when we’re older.

Cheryl-oh my gosh Cheryl, you are in a wonderful area for that and you’re close to VA as well.  Click on the link  “Find One in your state”!

Eagle Ridge Realty- Wow.. I hope you had the annual pass!!

Tammy-make sure they get the pass and remember it’s a lifetime pass!!!

Hi Kathy, this is great news that is timely for the summer vacation soon to be upon us. I can qualify for one of these, and it is not the military one. :)

Good post Kathy.   With Yosemite National Park being so close to me I always buy a pass.  I get my moneys worth out of it and more.

Hi Kathy...

I read your post this morning but for some reason I forgot to comment. Did you know that by agreement with the states of North Carolina and Tennessee that the Great Smoky Mountains National Park cannot charge an admission fee?

Kathy:

Great information.  Our National Parks are all treasures that we need to protect.  We have a few in California, but my favorite is Yosemite.  It is gorgeous, especially in the winter.

Kathy, back in 2005 my husband retired. We sold our house and most of our belongings, bought an RV and hit the road. We paid $50 for an annual pass back then. We visited over 50 national parks and monuments. Boy did we get our monies worth as we traveled the country that year. This is one of the best values any family can find.

Jim- way to go!  Wouldn't it be nice if everyone in the US could see these great treasures.

Erica- its' a great savings and especially for those over 62.

Richard- I did not know that but sounds like a possible blog topic you should write!!!

Al & Peggy- they are ours and we should really try to see them.

Gretchen- I remember my parents taking me to see the Grand Canyon and the Painted Desert.

Evelyn- I've got to go back there!!!  That would make a great road trip!
