10 Comments on Tuesday's Treasures - It's lychee season in Haiku Maui - all you can eat
Georgina: I remember having a Lycheetini - ah!
Good day Georgina. Oh my....not my cup up tea but enjoy. Very different. Have a wonderful day and the lychee.
I've never had one of those before. What do they taste like?
Georgina, lychee is delicious and expensive. This year lychee trees in Venice FL not even bloomed yet.
They like heaven! Seriously, they taste a lot like green grapes with a very faint hint of pear perhaps. Texture much like a grape, very sweet and juicy, with a big black seed in the middle. A little messy to eat because you peel off the stiff hull and it drips all over your fingers. Best to eat outdoors where you can spit the seed out.
Yes they are very expensive so it's great to get them for free! Don't know why I haven't got a tree growing yet.
Thanks for your comments.
I will try it! Is it really sweet or not really sweet like strawberries? I wonder if I can go to a world foods market and get some.
OMG, my mouth is watering!!!! I used to have a lychee nut tree in my yard in Tarpon Springs that had fruit a year after planting! It was wonderful! (The idiot that bought the house took out all the fruit trees and put in palms!) I purchased a new tree last year but it isn't going as well here because of all the large Live Oak trees around..........not enough direct sun!
Georgina- I remember walking around our neighborhood on the windward side of Oahu (Kailua) after the lychee had fallen and been ravaged by birds. The sweet, fragrant ripeness would fill the air with its own special perfume that will always take me back to the aina and my homesickness for the islands!! Thanks for posting!
Georgina- I love lychee nuts! Our friends have one in their yard! Have you ever had dried lychee nuts?
They are really sweet and juicy and the flesh is smooth. They will probably have them in markets now or soon as this is the season for the next few months. I hear Florida is a big producer of lychee.
I haven't tried the dried product but I can imagine it's also deliciious. I won't bother to dry them as I have put a bunch into the freezer.
If you put them in the fridge before eating they are really really good!
