Is Taking Credit Cards for a home based business expensive?

If you run a home based business, you know what a headache it can be to know that you have a sale on the line but your customer doesn't have the cash with them for the purchase.  What can you do?  Many small business owners have discovered that offering credit card services to customers doesn't cost, it pays. credit cards for home based business

These days, it has become a real necessity to offer a variety of payment options, but that is no reason to have credit card processing services take a huge chunk of the first slice of the pie leaving you with the left overs. In today's market, competition is fierce out there and any number of credit card services are each trying for their share of what has become a $400 million a year industry.

Where should you begin?  Do some comparison shopping. The best services will not charge you an application or setup fee if you negotiate.  They will not set monthly minimums and will not charge you an annual fee.  They will also offer you a number of options for purchasing, leasing or renting a credit card machine.

There is a lot of competition for your account, so shop around for good rates on the percentage the company charges on your sale.  In the end, you are your own best advocate, so ask a lot of questions of as many companies as you can.

How long will it take to get set up?  Often, services are so streamlined that you can begin the very day you contract with your credit card service.  Others may require a bit more set up time, but these days, credit card processors know they are bidding against the competition for your business.  If you negotiate with them, they can often expedite your application and get you started within a day or two of  finalizing your agreement.

You should also ask the company for their customer service hours. If they are not doing business when you do business, they are not a good fit.  Imagine hosting a home party for friends and having a problem with the credit card system. If customer service isn't available, you've not only lost potential sales, you risk offending friends.  The larger companies all offer 24/7 customer service hours that will guarantee you a speedy resolution to problems that arise.

When choosing a credit card merchant service remember that you are their customer. Your customers want you to compete for their business, so be sure to let the company you want to use know that you have other options. You can sometimes  negotiate a better rate and lower fees simply by realizing that they are business owners too and know the value of keeping the customer happy.

When it comes to signing on with a credit card processing service, doing your homework before you sign on the dotted line will keep your customers happy and spare you some awful headaches! At the end of the day, you'll increase sales and reduce stress by carefully comparing services.

Tammy- this is something that Stagers discuss all of the time.  For a small business where some of our charges might be small (a $150 consultation fee) we have to weigh the cost.  But I agree with you,  to keep up and be a viable service we have to consider offering a credit card service.

I agree that almost all of us need to have credit card access, small or large.  As a lender, we have the issue of ordering appraisals that we are on the hook for.  Checks can bounce and then we're paying for over $400 in charges for a loan that never closes.  Using credit card payment for these can save a lot over time.

Pay Pal has worked well for me since my customers are all long-distance. A few prefer to send a check in the mail, and once or twice I've had someone who wanted to purchase my letter sets but wouldn't use Pay Pal.

I've appreciated it because I only pay the fee when someone makes a purcahse. I didn't realize that you could get a vendor account with a credit card processor without paying huge start up and monthly fees. So... thanks for the information!

Tammy -

I just left a message on Katy's re-post that my dad way back in the day had to pay a hefty bill to utilize credit cards when he was running his auction company.  He did what he had to do to keep his clients happy and coming back for more!  Great job and suggested.

Tammy- I've had clients choose one home inspector over another because of the fact that he took credit cards. Plastic is a way of life and I agree if done correctly setting up credit cards as a payment option will pay off.

Kathy, especially for businesses like yours, having that option is valuable to your work. Thanks for the reblog and commenting.

Doug, that's exactly right! You have to weigh the costs of those bounce checks and no closings to cover it.

Marte, I actually use it as well since it's easy with folks all over.

Yes, John, it's not nearly as expensive as it use to be.. Heck, our family video place takes cards for $.54! purchases!! (Don't ask me how I know that)  :-\

Amanda, YES, if done correctly!! So important. People want convenience!

Thanks for the info, Tammy.  I had a credit card company call me today to ask for our business.  My contracting company is contemplating it for homeowner calls.

Tammy, my office doesn't really handle other people's money, but this is a great tool for business owners to make sure they get paid right on the spot!

We have recently incorporated our online consulting company to accept credit card. It has allowed us to get cash into or account in 1 day vs, 10 to 15 days. Paper checks have to be manually deposited and in many cases come with a hold. Customers who signup for www.AffordableWebPortals.com are setup to process online transactions. See my blog on PCL. online transactions is a key step in that process. Thanks for your detailed report. Doug

Tammy, a well-written post on providing a service to your customers; as an agent I don't take payment directly but this would be a good source of information to share with others who do.

Good topic. I need to setup a paypal account for a new agent I hired. I don't have brick and mortar and he could pay by check but that just seems archaic. I suppose I will bite the bullet and do it. Not sure about Cardpay but will look into a device for my Tab.

Have a Blessed Sunday!
Sincerely,

Cathy Bureau
