Naperville Illinois was founded in 1831 by Joseph Naper. Joseph, his brother John and 5 other families formed a community they called the Naper Settlement. A year later, the community boasted a population of over one hundred residents. The growing settlement became a stagecoach stop on the road from Chicago to parts west. The Naper Settlement was incorporated into the Village of Naperville in 1857 and later into the City of Aurora in 1890. The city remained fairly small until the expansion of I-88 in the 1980's began a period of rapid real estate growth. It was one of the state's fastest growing cities in the 1980's and 1990's. Today, the city has mostly been developed and is experiencing some re-development as homeowners in certain parts tear down the existing homes to build large estates.

Naperville is another "river community", parts of which are situated along the DuPage River. The City of Naperville has stressed the river's importance to the community by designing and building a picturesque river walk along its banks. Naperville features a strong industry as well as plentiful spots for recreation and leisure. The Naperville Park District maintains over 130 parks in the area. Transportation is also convenient to Naperville residents, including I-88 to the north, I-55 to the south and a large Metra stop near downtown Naperville on the Burlington/Northern/Santa Fe line.
