Aurora, Illinois

Aurora Illinois was founded in 1834 by the McCarty brothers, Joseph and Samuel from New York. Real estate played a big part in Aurora's beginnings - the brothers were looking for a place to build a sawmill and the Fox River afforded them the perfect opportunity. They bought real estate from the government and several squatters east of the Fox River and named the new community McCarty Mills. The budding town soon became a stagecoach stop on the road from Chicago to destinations west. In 1854 a town named Hartford started to grow on the west side of the Fox River. In 1856, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad relocated its construction and repair shops to the community, boosting industry and population as well as forming a large transportation inlet into the area. The two towns joined in 1857 and incorporated as the City of Aurora.

The City of Aurora is famous for being one of the first cities in the United States to install electric street lights in 1881. To display this distinction, Aurora adopted its official nickname "The City of Lights" in 1908. The second largest city in Illinois (157,267 residents according to a special census in 2003), Aurora features a diverse population and strong community. The city is a very popular place for industry - featuring convenient transportation, large workforce and stable economy. Aurora also features many recreational and entertainment venues. The Aurora Park District maintains several parks including the large Phillips Park and Mastodon Lake area, Splash Country - a family water park among others. You can also find the Aurora Sci-tech Museum, Pioneer Village, Paramount Theatre, Hollywood Casino and several large farmers markets within the community. Various transportation options remain a boon to the residents of Aurora. The city remains a major stop on the modern Metra system - the Burlington/Northern/Santa Fe route and it is also conveniently located off of I-88 giving straight-line access to downtown Chicago.
