I'm angry!  I'm sad!  And I am tired of feeling this way EVERY winter!  The news today reported a fire in Clay Township, where I live.  A mobile home was destroyed, and the man inside was killed.  These stories are all too common!

The victim was a 79 year old man who was well-known and loved in our little community.

It appears (formal investigation under way, of course) that he had SEVERAL sources of heat hooked up to inadequate electric service, including propane heaters, kerosene heaters, electric heaters, and a wood-burning stove.

The man died trying to stay warm.

That is one of the saddest things.  And it makes me so MAD!  Why are people being forced to risk their safety in order to stay warm?  Why can't people afford to heat their homes?  Or pay their medical bills?  Or buy food?

I watched the primary results come in last night.  I hear the same rhetoric over and over and over.

SOMEONE has to help!  Someone has to make this stop!  We are supposed to be the richest country in the world, and we have our own people starving and freezing.

I don't care what Britney Spears is doing today - someone tell me how we are all going to work together so this doesn't happen again.

Thanks for listening to my rant.....

Jayne,

Life can be very cruel and frustrating sometimes.  It sounds to me like you've just found yourself a cause to be passionate about.

Hi Jayne,  here in Houston we pay an additional few dollars on each bill to help provide heat and a/c for people that can not afford it.  Even if it is window units....I really like that idea.  Everyone in this huge town paying that...it adds up and helps a lot of people.

It's so sad what happened.

This is life.  Where did anyone say it was fair?

This country is the richest, because the opportunity exists for everyone to be successful.

Can anyone become a Realtor, Yes they have the opportunity.

Can everyone be successful as a Realtor, No they can't they don't have the skills.

Since when is it everyone's responsibility to take care of everyone else.  I have in-laws that can't afford heat sometimes.  Is it my problem that they spend their money on cable TV, beer and tobacco and not save it for what is important?  No but if they would work hard and improve themselves like most in this country and save their money for when it's needed.  They would have the things they need. If they can't work harder to make more then spend less on things they don't need.

Go and find out how many people who you say can't afford to pay medical bills, or heat, or food.  See how many of them have cell phone, cable TV, tattoos, tobacco addictions, alcohol addictions, drug addictions or eat at McDonalds for their meals.

I don't know how many people I see begging at the side of the road asking for money for food.  Yes, I feed sad for them, but when I notice them smoking.  I say tough let them starve.

Help is stopping at an accident site to help then out!

Help is saving someone from drowning.

Help is teaching someone to work so they feed themselves.

Help is not giving people money so that they can continue to spend on items that they don't need.  That is creating a dependency.  A dependency just as powerful as drug additions.

The politicians are out there right now saying that this country is broken; we need to fix health care, raise your taxes to help everyone.  Wake up the system is not broken, the system works great, if you are responsible for your actions and work hard for what you want.  No matter what you do you will never be able to help and protect every person in this country. Trying to fix something that is the best it can be will only destroy it for the rest of us, the ones it works for now. So the next time you hear a politician say that they government needs to take care of the people, why don't you ask them why don't they take care of them with the millions and millions that they have sitting in the bank.

Don't like the news turn it off.  What to change things! Then teach people to take care of themselves and be responsible.

Joseph,

Yes, our country is great.  Yes, we all have opportunities.  Yes, I agree with you that SOME people spend their money foolishly.  Yes, I think we should be TEACHING people to take care of themselves.

Do I want my taxes raised to fix this huge mess?  No, I don't.  Do I think the politicians are exclusively to blame?  No, I don't.

Do I think more people need to freeze or starve before I try to help with a solution?  No, I don't.

Jayne,

The someone who needs to help is me, and you, and the community.  It's not the government.  The government's job is to do the things individuals cannot do, like facilitating the building of the interstate road system.  I'm sad that the gentleman died, but it's not the government's fault.  It's the fault of we the people.  Who will you help today?
