If you’ve ever lived in Florida or South Georgia and are familiar with love bugs, this title might well leave you saying…huh? But yes, serendipity is involved because of these love bugs.

For those of you who have never had the pleasure of “love bug season”, they are small black flying insects often in the embrace of passion getting smacked by the millions on the fronts of unsuspecting vehicles in a few southern states. D I S G U S T I N G for the vehicle and unfortunate for the bugs.

Anyway, Mom and I were driving northbound on US19 in Florida in her brand new Dodge Journey with the pretty silver paint job and by the time we reached the northern part of the state her windshield was completely polluted with the guts of the bugs and her grill was nasty to behold as a yucky carnage carrier. Once we left Florida, no more bugs m’lady. Needless to say, one of the first orders of business was to find a car wash…as Mom put it, one with people not one that would just bake the bugs on further.

We were directed to a car wash in downtown Montgomery and don’t you know the employees were happy to see this challenge of a job?! They assured us they would get the bugs off. As fascinating as carwashes are, I left my mother at the car wash and took a walk downtown. Roger…you’ll love this! Across the street from the carwash was some hotel…snazzy, real snazzy. I’m not sure of the name but it had RSA in it….maybe the Radisson or Renaissance, I don’t know and I’m sure to catch h e double hockey sticks from my buddy Roger “nose for details” Mucci. That’s okay, I’m a big girl and can take the flack!

I should have taken a photo of the bugs but that might have been unfit for pleasurable viewing and anyway I’ll probably get the chance on the return drive to St Pete this weekend.

Considering that a high rise in Sylva, NC is about three stories…downtown Montgomery, Alabama was pretty darned interesting! I’m a big believer in serendipity and although I hate that so many bugs had to give their lives for me to take my photos…I have to say thank you to the love bugs.

Mona - There is nothing more disturbing than to have your new car bombarded with insects.  When my car was new, I had it all of 48 hours before a gravel truck driving in front of me on the freeway, tossed out stuff, and cracked my windshield, while puting tiny chips in the paint on the hood of my car.  Your photos are wonderful, so that's the really bright part of your story!

Hello Mona. I am so jealous of your ability to post photos from anywhere. That said, I appreciate your insights and love the photos.

Forget the bugs. I love the angle of your pictures. I can't say I've ever had the driving experience that you described.

Mona.. i would drive every May from U of Miami and head home after school was over for the year. Every year we had those nasty love bugs cover the car.. Someone invented a netting for the grill that helped .. but we never found where to buy that. The car wash always loved me when i got home. We zapped a few over the years. Sorry love bugs.. but I needed to head home for the summer to Connecticut.

Mona -  sounds like you had a great mini vacation with mom, and the photos are great.. No guilt of course, but Sienna, your office manager has been pulling your weight while you have been gone, and she would ike to stretch her legs from the office and go for a long walk to get away from things... so I am sure you are much WELCOMED BACK! LOL. G

Gita, thank you. This has been a very special time with Mom.

Sharon, Mom just toddled off to bed...wanted to know if I was setting an alarm so we'd get off in a timely manner...as if!  I will get up at dog o'clock like normal, lol.

janeAnne, serendipity is one of my favorite words of all time.  I'm hoping love bug season is over by now.  It usually only lasts a couple of weeks.

Myrl, I remember my very first brand new car...a white Mitsubishi Tredia with black racing stripes.  One trip on 301 from St Pete to Jacksonville, brand new asphalt highway and you get the picture.

Sheila, you can do this too.  It's a little odd not having my own computer but it can be done.  Thanks and I hope your vacation is going well.

Jill, thanks so much.  Leslie will tell you that I'm often distracted by geometric shapes.

Janis, I remember those love bugs too from when I lived in Miami in the 70s.  They were so messy.

Gay, lol...Sienna is giving me lots of "what for" and already seems to sense that I'm headed out again tomorrow.  By Tuesday, routine (as much as REALTORS ever see anyway) will again resume.

Hi Mona, I have certainly experienced the bugs before and I sure don't miss them. We did have a special petroleum solution that took them off with a bit of effort. Your phooto are certainly a great keep sake and thanks for sharing them. You are getting so good Mona.

You create an accurate picture, for those unfamiliar with lovebugs, of the mess they cause. Not all car washes appreciate the challenge. Great photos, enjoy the rest of your trip!

Hi Mona,

I would have liked to see the bugs and the dirty car too. Call me sick, but I like to photograph rodents and insects too but usually do not publish rodents for fear of someone writing a nasty note. But bugs...go for it and I have never seen a Love Bug before?

Have a nice weekend.

Hi Mona,  My husband took my white car (Sugar) to Lincoln Nebraska for a software seminar for 3 days.  I am dreading seeing the grill when he gets back.  They have some mighty big bugs in Nebraska.

I am SO glad you stopped by today.  Hopefully your mom's car wasn't covered in May flies before you left the county.  They are swarming, but tend to be out in the morning and evening and not mid day.  But they I woulda washed the car too to have you visit for a while.

Now I'll be back to see how you answer Allen's question.

Hi William, I had been away from FL long enough that I'd forgotten about love bugs and have to admit that I hadn't missed them either.

Ron, thanks...when I get back in town I'll add the one of the entire chrome structure.  Leslie thinks I'm missing perspective without it and she might be right.

Thanks Wayne...I fly home in the morning.

Hi Kristin, we didn't run into any problems with the bugs this trip so I'm sorry I don't have any to show you.  Maybe if you googled FL and love bugs they would show up.

Well Allen, there would be a boy bug and a girl bug flying uhm...well...together.

Belinda, if you were nice enough to let him take Sugar then I'm sure he'll be nice enough to hit the carwash when he gets back lol.

Tammy, I was so glad to have had the chance to see you too.  We didn't run into any GA bugs on the trip to Valdosta.

Maria, thanks a lot.  It's good to hear from you.
