Asbestos, New York City Rules and Regulations

A very lengthy pdf (82 pages) of the rules a regulations concerning the removal of Asbestos can be found at:

Make no mistake, this is a job for the pros, not for the average homeowner.  Our children's lives are at stake, make sure you if you think you have asbestos in your home, call a professional remediation company to protect yourself.

While left alone, most experts believe that asbestos in your home is not a hazard to your health, but I believe that most folks will want to get rid of it once they know for sure that they have it in their home.

Right now, homeowners are required to disclose if they have any knowledge of Lead Paint hazard when selling homes built before 1978, but nothing about asbestos.  This should also be addressed.  Ask your home inspector to check for this when purchasing a new place.  If you are already in your home and not planning to move any time soon, you can still get the company to come back and check for any asbestos.  I don't think they would charge a lot for this.  If they say they don't do this kind of an inspection, ask them for a reference to a company that does.

Kenneth Asbestos is a serious environmental hazard although it is still use in some everyday items.   I had an education on the subject about 7 years ago when selling a home with this isssue.
