Knowing Where To Put The Chalk Mark

ChalkKnowing Where To Put The Chalk Mark

There's a story that once upon a time there was a giant turbine that was out of balance.  Try as they might, the company experts couldn't get it back into balance so a specialist from outside the company was called in.  The specialist arrives, examines the turbine for a few minutes, walks over to the turbine, pulls a piece of chalk out of his pocket, puts a mark on the turbine and says "Add a one pound weight here".

The specialist presents his bill for $10,000.  The company representative almost blows a gasket "$10,000???!!!  Are you kidding me??  You were only here for FIVE minutes!!  I need to understand this $10,000 fee!"

Then the specialist itemizes the bill:

  • $1 for chalk
  • $9,999 for knowing where to use the chalk

Now to many people we probably seem like the specialist that walks in and places that chalk mark.  At a glance it might seem to some people that we "don't do much" and people that don't understand the intricacies of our business might think all we do is open doors for buyers and stick signs in the yard for sellers.

But honestly, what we do is MUCH more complicated than merely opening doors and driving a sign in the yard.  Our job requires considerable experience to be successful in helping you realize your real estate goals.  The pros and cons of a property, how & where to market, the language to write in a contract, all skills established transaction after transaction.

Putting our experience to work for you is how we place our chalk marks.  What you see on the surface might seem simple, but knowing Chalkthe pitfalls to each transaction is where we prove our expertise.  Providing you the guidance to escape the hazards and providing you a smooth transaction is how we prove our worth.

So which color chalk would you like us to use for you?

BLiz - this story and how you relate it to what we do really nails it!     For the first time in my career, I just negotiated a listing at a higher than normal commission rate.    The sellers initially balked, until I explained all that I was going to do for them.   This listing is going to take a lot more work and experience than normal, and I'm going to over perform for them.  Once they absorbed it all, they heartily agreed.

M.C.  Congrats on that!  It's a special case and special cases can deserve more.  Glad you were able to get the sellers onboard with that!

Excellent post.  I think you found a good way to describe our value.  Although when I first say drawing lines with chalk I wondered if we were dead.

Bill and Liz,

This is so true.  I'm sure it appears to many buyers and sellers that our jobs are so easy, but us Realtors know better!

Very good analogy... and so true.

Just like going to the doctor for a sore throat. The visit might be for 5 mins. You pay $100 for the visit, and go spend another $50 on medication, then you feel better the next morning (not that quick all the time).

Some things require years of experience, and how hard did that engineer have to work to know where to put the chalk mark?

Gene, No morgue photos here, we're all alive and surviving :)

DeeDee, Anyone that has worked more than a couple of transactions will understand it's not the piece o' cake many think :)

Eugene, Exactly!  Much of what we pay for in services (not just real estate either) is for the training and experience leading up to those moments of decision.

Hi Liz & Bill,

This is a compelling analogy that helps emphasize the "value of knowledge" we bring to the table.Same with everyone being able to use a knife - would we then let just anyone perform our surgery?

Yours is an analogy to remember when we need to internalize then assert our worth (commissions? discounting?) as agents.

Cheers.

Ranji, No doubt, our knowledge is where our power originates.  Without it we're useless to our clients.

Bliz, love this analogy! Have heard this story before but forgot it. There is so much more that goes on in a deal than meets the eye. We earn our money!

Sharon, There is so much that goes on behind the scenes.  It's a balancing act in how much do we tell our clients that we're doing so we're aware, without at the same time getting in to being overly detailed and reporting.
