In thinking about which tool I wanted to award the honor of being that one thing I really couldn't be successful without, I considered and discarded many fine pieces of equipment. They're all essential to some extent or another, in that when I need them, it's really good that they're there. But are they really irreplaceable? No, not really. It might be a pain trying to get by without my cell phone, iPad, the MLS, or many of the other things I use to do my job - but I could if I had to.

But I did think of one absolutely essential tool - and I know that I would be completely and totally lost without it.

But it's a problem for this contest. It isn't new, and it isn't really technology. But it is something I have become much better at using over the years. And it doesn't easily fit any of the contest categories:

  • It is hardware, in the sense that it uses circuits and wiring - just not of a conventional technological nature - at least not yet.
  • It is software - actually, in this case, I believe the term is wetware.
  • And it's an app. It runs mostly in the background, and comes into play when I call it up, or sometimes totally on its own, and it's barely controllable.

It's my sense of humor.

Let's face it - real estate, and life, can be a complete bitch. It can take us down to the deep dark places where the sun never shines. It can ruin our mood and our day, change our normally pleasant disposition to something ugly, and make us feel terrible about ourselves and others.

But only if we let it. Humor is my first and strongest line of defense against bad acts, weirdness, incompetence, greed, corruption, laziness and those completely random things that come at us out of nowhere, apparently sent by evil beings for no good reason at all.

BudaiSo when something bad happens, I rely on my sense of humor, and that usually works - behind the bad stuff, there's usually something funny, particularly if you have a taste for the absurd. If I can find a way to laugh at it, about it, or with it, it's going to be a whole lot less of a downer. And make no mistake - often enough, I'll wind up laughing at myself. It really helps to be able to laugh - it releases good endorphins, lowers stress, lightens the mood, and moves me to a better place.

Sure, it's got a learning curve, just like any good tool. You have to figure out what type of humor and how much of it you'll need, and you have to get the timing right. I'm still working on it, and my tech support - Mary - keeps telling me I'm not as funny as I think I am. But I don't know of anything else quite as effective.

Without my sense of humor, I'd much less effective - and having much less fun.

Good morning Dick --- so very true, if you didn't laugh about the "stuff" you might cry - so I say have a sense of humor about it and the result will do wonders for your attitude and for those around you.   Great post!

Dick- excellent, perfect, well written, suggested.... I could go on!  Dick, I love to laugh more than just about anything.  And being able to find something humorous in tough and trying times can be a life saver.  And I can see by the smile on your face that humor is something you do keep in your life.

Dick- this is a vey good post!  Laughter is the best medicine and in  today's stressful world with all the "technology" that we think we can't live without we often forget to relax, laugh and enjoy life.  Life is full of curve balls and when we can laugh through those rough times we can have a better attitude each day.

Dick ~ I have to agree. With all of the things going on in our lives, humor HAS to be the number one resource to fall back on when needed. I know it has saved me numerous times. When I see  grumpy, emotionless, pessimistic people, I can only imagine them having a Massive Heart Attack and dying a lonely, bitter death. Humor is an essential part of my life and my business. When I see people that have no expression on their face, out of the blue, I will do what I can to make them smile. It doesn't always work, but at least they'll know someone was interested in trying to help them out. Great Post!    :)

I love a sense of humor in anyone, and I have to have one myself, or I would go crazy. Have a great weekend.

As Jimmy Buffet puts it so well in "Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitude," " If we didn't laugh we would go all go insane."

And, you are really right about the ability to laugh at one's self...paramount to a good life. :)

Dick,

I feel the same way and went out of my way to address the nature of the contest.  And you are absolutely one hundred percent right about the sense of humor. There are many times during the day, when Ron and I just crack each other up when tension and frustration show up.  Our cats add to the merriment also, there is always some antic at hand.  Laughter is and remains the best medecine ever. I think your sense of humor is essential in any business.  And, yours is wicked.  I thought the Buddha was a nice touch.  And, who is Mary to decide if we think you're hilarious?  (sorry, Mary!)

WOW what an excellent post (nothing against your others) but this is, simply put, great!

I try to do the same thing... Have fun, laugh, smile and take things on a low level as my blood pressure doesnt need any reason to be elevated it doesnt change anything.

However, on that note, I do run into clients that the same question over and over again and their failure to listen or act on advice simply catches me at a bad moment and I fire them. Just like I did this afternoon.

You want to help but some people simply cant help themselves.

GREAT Post and thanks for the refocus!

Now I know this contest has taken a twist when someone is quoting JIMMY BUFFET.  Now you can safely say this contest is a HIT!  Yes, having a sense of humor is completely needed especially when you find out about a month into a short sale that the seller has rented the home to the buyer in contradition to the arm's length agreement.

Wetware?  What's wetware.

Dick, I enjoy your sense of humor and keep thinking about you with your seat belt buckle hanging out the car door sparking against the pavement as you drive.

Hello Dick.......

It was a very interesting path to get to the very essence of happiness.

Don't take yourself too seriously.

My wife always asks me, "Can't you ever be serious?" My answer is always the same.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Keep thinking the good thoughts.

Best wishes,

RJ

WOW! Dick. I am glad I was still able to hit that Suggest Button. Your entry needs to be awarded "First Place" IMO. Where would we be without "Our Sense of Humor"? Keep Smiling and Enjoy Life! Don't Let anything rob you of your "Joy". Have a Great Day!
