Hickory NC: Putting on the Ritz at the Harper House

Hickory NC: Putting on the Ritz at the Harper House On Saturday, June 2, 2012, the grounds of the Harper House/Hickory History Center will be transformed into a bonafide 1920s speakeasy. Don your glad rags for this festive occasion. There will be jazz music, dancing, hors d’oeuvres, and plenty of activities to entertain all the Janes and Joes.

Speakeasies became popular during Prohibition (1920-1933) when it was illegal to manufacture or sell alcohol in the United States. These establishments were secret places for citizens to come and imbibe alcohol away from the eyes of the law. Usually underground, Speakeasies required passwords in order to gain entrance and keep their illegal activities secret.
