How did I get here?

If you have talent, if you believe in yourself, and if you have something to offer the world and nobody knows it, what are you going to do?

All the great leaders in the world be it a president, teacher, philosopher, architect, preacher, they all start at the bottom with nothing but their God given passion and a mass of obstacles.

I wanted to share with you how I got started in this business, maybe it will help some of you. I did not have the luxury of a college degree when I began. I began with a talent. That is it! I was in my early thirties and had 2 boys to raise.

Year one - Used my rent money and bought a "kit" from Transart and made $800 my first sale to my dentist. After the gravy sales it went dry...had to market myself...stress set in as a companion. I met an interior designer that did model homes. I asked her if she could use my art in the homes. Her budget did not allow for my retail pricing so I reduced it for the volume. I asked her if I could help her accessorize. She said yes. I worked for her for ZERO dollars for one year, learning the business and living off what little profit I made.

Year two - At the beginning of the second year I had my own subdivisions and 7 designers and staff members working under me. I made minimum wage plus commissions. Costly mistakes were taken out of my commissions. We used to kid around about "The house that Sheron built" because I owned every blind that was ordered wrong, every table that came in that was the wrong size, every stitch of drapery fabric that was ordered wrong. I learned the hard way.

Year three and four - Still working for the studio and my friend at minimum wage plus commissions but I had learned how to hang on to my cut. Landed all the models for companies like Grupe and Valley Construction, Shubin and Paulis. The studio was my home and I loved it.

Year five - My friend got married and sold the studio. I moved to a little beach town and went to work for a prominent designer. Later that year I opened my own studio in San Clemente, Ca. The struggles didn't stop but for the next 21 years no one had to tell me what to charge or how to market myself...I knew! I knew what I could do and I knew what I was worth. No one else could know that better than me. I earned my stripes and I have decorated multi-million dollar homes, a castle, Fortune 500 businesses, a beauty queens home, and many, many more.

I have been semi-retired for almost 10 years now while raising my granddaughter, taking only the jobs that I want to. I started a web based business 2 years ago and love being home.

I am a firm believer that "Learning is in the doing" and if you don't stop you will get to the top of where ever you want to go.

My advice to those of you who are just starting out and are wondering what to do, just walk into your local real estate office with your tool belt on and ask them which one of them would like you to stage their oldest listing absolutely free. If you are any good you will be busier than a cat in a rocking chair factory.

I see my new family is here for me every time. Thanks for listening. I just wanted you all to know what makes me tick. Sometimes I think that you may take me as a snoot so I think I cleared that one up. :) You are growing on me!

Hey Sheron

This is a great encouragement to all of us, because we all need to realize that nothing comes easy. It takes hard work and oftentimes for little money until your worth is noticed. But the beauty of it is that you knew your worth and kept going forward.

The latter idea is awesome and I too plan on trying this very soon. But I love mostly that you are now semi-retired and raising your grandchild. That will be your biggest investment with the highest return yet.

Continued success, from one fellow staging granny to another.

Phyllis - I am stunned! You are a grandmother? I would never have guessed it. I'll bet you have a story to tell yourself. I have had my granddaughter since she was 9 months old. It has been an absolute joy. Thank you all so much!

Wonderfully inspiring...Thankyou!  I also use that free staging idea - sometimes it's the way to get your foot in the door, which leads to a castle!

Sheron, You have shown us all that persistance is key!  Something I need to remember. Regarding the free staging to an old listing...I had a student from the local high school working with me last week for a Jr. Work Week and I couldn't give away a free staging if my life depended on it!  Just shows that there's still some work to do to get the word out to realtors...

I am glad your shared that this all takes time. I think many people enter the staging field thinking it will be a magic carpet ride to a cash cow business.

Ummmmm... like NO WAY!

Good advice to Stage it forward....

Sheron, this post is inspiring to say the least.  Thank you for sharing and reminding us all that perseverance pays off.  It is so fulfilling to be able to make a career from what you love and I admire you for your accomplishments and success.  I especially admire your work ethic and drive.  All while raising children and now a grandchild, you have so much to be proud of.

I'm really glad your here!

Judy - that has happened to me. I used to work the swap meets giving away free windowtreatments consultations and knowing how much work that would be, I could not believe one Saturday there wasn't a nibble. Don't give up...they were probably eyeing the chocolate cookies. (Orange county swap meets are to die for...nothing like them in the world)

Jana, it was a real castle with turrets and all...service entrance for the staff and I was asked to update it. Uhuh!

It was used for Gary Harts campaign when he got caught with his pants down. What a mess that made for everyone. Long story

Semi-retired? I see you all over the web so I can't imagine what you were like when you were working. LOL  My grandmother never looked so good so something you are doing must be working.  Back to the blog, I so appreciate all of your wisdom and your willingness to share your experience with all of us. BTW- never received that can of California sunshine I wanted you to send me.

I see that your grandaughter has a pot of flowers and appears ready to place them somewhere. Is she already in staging training? That reminds me I must blog about flowers and staging. Thanks for the sunshine.

Sheron - thanks for sharing your story - I will remind myself when I get impatient.  It takes time to build a business.

Sheron and Phyllis - OMG both you guys are Grandmas - I don't look as good as you today (And my oldest is only10) so there is absolutely no hope for me being a hot granny.  I'm going to settle for being the granny with the beautifully decorated home. LOL

Thanks for the inspiration. So true, just believe in yourself, follow your passion, envision your destination and all will fall into place.  I look forward to enjoying my grandchildren at retirement and only hope I look half as good as you do.

You are all toooooooo kind. I am blushing. My darling granddaughter will be 11 in March. You all have inspired me so much that I am thinking about coming out of retirement. No kidding. I am in the process of talking to my body about that. I don't know what the rest of the world is doing out there but I think we are onto something very big. Hugs to all!
