The American Dream Is Not a Cliche

By
Real Estate Agent with Remax Metro Staten Island, New York

The American Dream. I sent out an email to Friends, Family and Associates, also made a few phone calls, asking a reply in one sentence or one paragraph; The question : What is The American Dream? I promised to post only the replys first Name and State of residence, to remain anonymous. The reply could be very simple or complicated. What I found is the American Dream,  is not a trite phrase or expression of owning a home.   The American Dream has different meaning for each individual.

Here are the answers I received...

L*O*V*E*  Joe - New York

I guess you mean a real estate dream since I have others as well.  I think the American Dream is to have a beautiful home in a great area and community where schools are excellent and there is no crime and not too far of a commute to the job and shopping. And to have a nice vehicle and still be able to afford a nice vacation every year and enjoy dining out etc.   Tony - New York

Besides freedom attainment, end of terrorism, good health and happiness.  Robbin - Florida

To me the American dream is also the international dream...many come here to find a future for themselves and their families.  Maybe not so much to be rich financially but to prosper and be a vital member of their community.  To see their children happy..and their children's children....   Maria - New York

The American Dream to me is having enough money to pay all of your bills every month without carrying over a balance.  It's also about having a little extra to spend on luxuries like vacations, personalized shopping, etc. It's being at a point in your life where you don't have to worry about where your next dollar is going to come from.  When you come to a stumbling block and your income changes..do you still have enough on the side to compensate for the extra money that you were making?  I could go on about this subject, but I'll leave things alone for now.  Brian - New York

Peace of Mind.   Nick - New York

Realize the value of simplicity of life.  Carole - New York

Having security with someone and having love which everyone needs.  Just being happy with each day we live without sickness. Without your health you have nothing.  Maryann - New York

What is the American dream?  It is different for everyone. For some it is wealth and power, for  others it is religious freedom and justice. For some  it may be a roof over their heads.....   The American dream consists of....Justice, Fairness, democracy and equality.  We are all very blessed to stand freely and come and go as we please. For this is the American dream.     Genevieve - New York

The American Dream...
Being a First Generation American it is the American Dream that my parents came here to pursue.
What exactly is "The American Dream?"  Is it to aquire a piece of Real Estate?  A job of Choice?
The freedom to express ones thoughts?  To practice Religion of choice?  To love everyone, not because of color but because they are your brother?  To be "One Nation, Under God" ?  To say "In God we trust"?  To believe that the God we are speaking of is the God the Puritans left England for? And some that lost their lives for? To believe there are 10 "golden rules" to live by and they came from The Holy Bible? That this country was founded by people that formed a government that was based on that very Bible and that very God?
Yes, that is the American Dream.  Don't take it away, Don't change it, Don't be ashamed of it.....if you are, then you have lost the dream.

Love your post, I think that Carole from NY nailed it for me, "Realize the value of simplicity of life". It's so easy to forget that.

Connie,

Thank you for including me on your question of what I thought the American Dream was.

I think that Genevieve really hit it and was very eloquant with her words.

Your site is very informative and very well put together.

Thank you for sharing.
