Showing Homes in 108 Degree Heat to Newcomers
Our summer weather is ON in full force. Now’s the time when we say, “But it’s a dry heat.” Visitors are always encouraged to dress for the weather, but in Arizona, that’s a whole ‘nother experience.
Today, while showing homes in Scottsdale all afternoon, the climate button on my dash showed 108 degrees at about 2:00. My front seat client exclaimed, “My engagement ring is so tight.” It was a great time to remind her to open up another bottle of water and not to resize her ring.
All too often, newcomers aren’t used to the heat or drinking so much water when visiting Scottsdale to buy homes. This client was from Texas, so she had an “idea: about the heat. Her fiance, however, was a native and used to the heat and how to dress and how much water to drink.
If you’re visiting Scottsdale in search of homes and plan to be outside, even for a little while, be prepared to bring along a cooler full of water and lots of ice. Wearing clothes that breathe and comfortable shoes is highly recommended. As for me, I’m used to it, but it never hurts to heed my own advice!
I went to College at the University of Arizona in Tuscon.. and I can tell you at 108 it doesn't really matter if it is dry heat! You do need water, ice and clothes that breath.. some AC is great too!
You understand it very well then! Thaks for commenting Joan. Arizona is a long way from New Hampshire!
Hi Jan,
This might be a great tip to email your prospective clients who make plans to come into town to look for homes. You know...a thoughtful note or perhaps a link or clipping that gives them the info without making them feel like you don't respect their intelligence. We get some pretty rough tropical weather in the summer here in Tampa and no matter how much people may think they know it will be hot - nothing prepares them for the weather when they step off the plane for the first time. I'm sure it is even more intense in the desert. Sometimes those thoughtful little gestures can do so much to create rapport and goodwill.
Thanks Dave! Great idea! And since I used to live in Alabama, I understand your weather quite a bit!
Jan, I had to laugh out loud at this. The ring resizing issue, LOL. When I first moved here from Chicago, I figured I "knew it" - of course I'd been here once or twice on vacation. Now, I don't leave the house without at least one fresh bottle of water in my car cup holder and a cooler full of water for my clients. I don't like using plastic bottles, but at times like this - it's necessary!!!
My pleasure, Jan! Your blog piece planted the seed. I plan to implement this right away as we always have people relocating here from all over the world. Seeing a poor soul come here from Northern Europe in the summertime....well...it's not always a comfy adjustment. This will help and I owe you one for this.
Thanks for the chuckle! Yes, she actually asked her fiance if she should resize her ring! I tried not to laugh out loud. Anyway, she went through 3 bottles of water in about 3 1/2 hours. I told her to keep drinking! You bet - water, water, water!
Dave - I'm flattered that anything I write is helpful for someone else. Writing has always been a pasion of mine and it's fun to put the words together. Best of luck!
Hi Jan, water is so important. People don't realize they need to stay hydrated. Thanks for the
wheather report. I have relatives in Scottsdale . It was 85 degrees here today and a beautiful sunny
day in Boca Raton, Fla.
Have a great Memorial Day.
Thanks Irene! Hope you have a wonderful weekend and Memorial Day remrembance. What relatives do you have Scottsdale?
