Today was a slower day…. Stephanie wanted to go to the knock off market for foreigners. It is famous and in the guide book. We (Jesse, Stephanie, Emil and I) hooked up with Daniel Wenz (who we saw before)… Daniel went to school with Stephanie, Jesse and our son Jonathan. We went to a Mexican/Vietnamese restaurant… No kidding…. The Vietnamese food was very good the Mexican food looked suspect to anyone who is only 1 week out of Idaho. We all enjoyed our lunch… Then we marched to the knock off market…Randall and Jesse were miffed about being taken shopping…. Bargaining is expected here… It seems that they settle at about 15 to 25% of asking price. Jesse is a surprisingly good bargainer… Randall (with Jesse’s help bought the most items and spent the most money). My mother was also a good bargainer. We bought some silk jackets, a Chinese dress, a chess set, a tee shirt, a pig, some creatures… Maybe some other stuff… Afterwards we went to a very nice shopping district then we went to the embassy district… At first we were going to find each of our embassies but we gave out…Or at least I did… We went to dinner at the strange bar called Helen’s that I described before… I am afraid I was not happy there. The kids seemed to like it. The food was Western and I am in the orient for oriental food… Most of the menu was starchy (which is not good for me)… They had all sorts of writing on the wall from many different patrons… Some of it quite obscene. There were some hookah smokers there. If you want the Western bar scene this is the place to be in Beijing…. The kids went shopping and Jesse took us back to the apartment. Even Randall needed Advil.. Tomorrow the Great Wall of China!

Hi Debbie,

I just read all your China blogs and enjoyed them a lot. Thanks for sharing a bit of China with us. I'm glad you are describing the food so well, because I am always curoius about that. Enjoy the rest of your trip, and say hi to Jesse for me. -- Margie
