Do Your Sellers Consider Themselves to be "Tim the Toolman"?

Is it just here in Hawaii or do a lot of other states seem to have more and more homeowners that go to a local home improvement store, take a free 2 hour class and then consider themselves an expert in that particular area?

The amount of homes that I enter is considerably high.  Most of them fit their description that is given to them on the listing as posted on our MLS.  However, even though it says "newly installed wood laminate flooring" or "freshly painted" does not really tell the whole truth.

Have you ever looked closely at a flooring job that was done by an amateur?  There are gaps between the laminate planks, they don't line up properly along the baseboard, the joining of the carpet to the laminate floor is totally noticeable, there are penny nails in the baseboard that were not taped in with an awl and not filled over properly with wood spackle.  And how about the paint jobs?  Yes the wall has a coat of paint but the owner should have properly masked the ceiling and placed drop cloths on the floors.

I guess they should include some of this at the home improvement classes!

David and Tonya - My favorite is the laminate floors that are ballooning in the center of the room, because they butted it to the walls or doorways and didn't allow for expansion.  I saw one expensive home in Kapolei at an open house that the flooring was ballooning an easy 4 inches in the air.

Randy-Dang!  I only know a little bit about the flooring but arent you supposed to START in the middle of the floor and work your way to the walls?
