Ferry

Mayor Hannemann announced yesterday that a ferry running from the 2nd City of Kapolei to Honolulu will be ready to run in April to provide some traffic relief.

The Ferry system will include at least two boats that seat 150 people each.  It will run from Kalaeloa to Pier 9 in downtown Honolulu.  Now I am not a rocket scientist, but how will two boats with 150 seats bring traffic relief.  Politicians love their toys.

Over the last few years there have been several test projects for the ferry system.  It was commonly thought that the system died.  Apparently we were wrong.

Still on the drawing board is the Super Ferry system that will transport passengers and vehicles to the neighbor islands.  I am excited about the idea of going to the neighbor islands and bringing my car with me.

Randy-Are you familiar with the "Grey Boat?"  It runs from Iriquois Point to Hickam AFB and to Pearl Harbor.  It runs in the morning and evening and is packed for almost trip.  If those people were on Ft Weaver road, our traffic would be worse than it already is in Ewa Beach.  I beleive that the ferry from Kapolei will help out considerably to keep a few more cars off the road.

David & Tonya - We ran the ferry a couple of different times before from a couple of locations including Kalaeloa and Iroquois Point, ending at Aloha Tower.  I rode it several times from Aloha Tower to the Leeward side and back.  It was never more than 1/2 full.

What they found was it was not heavily used and almost all of the people using it were bus riders.  The riders liked it because it cut about 10 to 15 minutes off their commute and it was a nicer ride than standing on the bus.  They also sold refreshments.

I worked at the legislature at the time and was under the impression that it died for lack of interest from the driving public and huge costs.  I did not realize they brought it back until this week.

One of my clients that lives in Ewa Beach rides the grey boat everyday.  He loves it.

George - Next will be automobiles.

David and Tonya - I am not familiar with the grey boat.  Is that military?  The one I am talking about is for the public.  After a few tries that were a total bust, they have decided to bring it back.  With government results don't matter.

Randy, wow things are changing if they get a ferry to the neighbor islands going, we used to have something that hydroplaned but something went wrong with it, remember? Hey, is there now a bridge going to Ford Island, or is there a still a ferry going there?

Lysa - Many years ago there was a ferry to the neighbor islands.  It was beofer my time, but I heard the stories.  You are right there is a bridge to Ford Island now.  They still have the shuttle boats to the Arizona Memorial.

Thanks for confirming the bridge, I saw a photo of a huge carrier heading into Pearl passing the Arizona and there was a bridge past Pearl going over to Ford so I was wondering if the photo was faked.
