Hey Man, You Got Any Grass!

After the flood much of the vegetation was killed off, everything from grass to trees. After all they were underwater for more then a month.

Many folks, like myself, were thrilled to be able to get back in our homes once they were re-constructed. Our yards did not hold nearly the importance that re-building our dwellings held. Very few of the thousands of homes that had to deal with the disaster had time to put seed down last fall. Still today, nearly a year later, less then 50% of the homes in the valley are completed and inhabited by their pre-flood owners.

I'm not a yard manic but when you have a two school age children and a dog it's nice to have a yard. Keep in mind those like myself who re-built have just spent thousands to restore our homes, an all mud yard and new flooring are not a good combination. A person could have to walk several blocks just to see a green yard this spring.

The Lions Clubs of our area teamed up with the City Forestry Department and are paying for trees to be replaced on the boulevards. Yesterday I received three miniature lilac trees on my boulevard (they even plant them for you). About two weeks ago The Minot Area Community Foundation, an all volunteer group working with donations, gave away 20 pound bags of grass seed to any home owner interested in "greening up" Minot.

Generousity keeps pouring into the Minot area and others affected by the flood of 2011 and for that we are forever grateful. I just wanted to say thank you to all.

From someone who doens't live in a flood area, this was an interesting story.  So glad to know that there are groups and organizations who lend a helping hand.  You're right, flooring and mud never make a good combination.

Hi Carla! I'm still often surprised at simple things I did not associate with the flooding that pop up. With all that water and such a warm winter I thought the bugs, especially the mosquito's, would be horrible but they say the flood waters flushed out many of the stagnant areas and sent them down the river. It's been a pleasant surprise that I have not seen a mosquito yet this spring.
